옛이야기가 읽히거나 상영되는 것이 아니라 구연되는 대표적인 현장이 공공도서관의 이야기 구연 프로그램이다. 본 연구는 서울시 공공도서관에서 행해지는 옛이야기를 비롯한 이야기 구연 프로그램의 현황을 정리하면서 도서관에서 옛이야기 구연이 가지는 위상과 문제점을 살펴보고자 한다. 이 논문은 이야기판으로서 도서관의 가능성을 확인하고, 도서관에서 옛이야기 구연의 활로를 모색하기 위한 방안으로 기획되었다. 이야기 구연 프로그램의 대표적인 두 가지 방식은 동화구연과 옛이야기 구연이다. 이때 옛이야기 구연과 동화구연은 대체 관계이거나 혹은 옛이야기 구연이 동화구연의 부분 집합인 것처럼 생각된다. 동화구연은 옛이야기 구연보다 대략 4배 이상 많은 도서관에서 개설되었으며 더 흥미롭고 더 교육적인 것으로 생각된다. 본고에서는 서울시 공공도서관에서 옛이야기 구연 사례를 살펴봄으로써 그 문제를 파악하고 대안을 제시하고자 하였다. 송파어린이도서관의 도깨비감투, 한국국학진흥원의 아름다운 이야기할머니, 은나래 자원봉사자의 활동에 나타난 문제점은 옛이야기를 완결된 것으로 향유하고자 하는 욕망에서 기인하였다. 본고는 그 대안으로 옛이야기를 기반으로 새로운 이야기를 만드는 “이야기 나눔”을 제안하였다. 이야기의 분기점을 택해서 이후의 이야기를 상상하도록 하고 그 이야기를 함께 나누는 것이다. 본고는 사례를 통해 구술 상황이 장애가 아니라 자유가 될 수 있는 가능성을 보여주었다. 이야기 나눔은 아이들이 모방할 수 있는 자료를 옛이야기 창고를 열어 제공하는 데에서 시작한다. 그 과정에서 불완전하고 정체가 규정되기 어려운 이야기들이 생성될 수밖에 없지만 이러한 이야기들 자체가 삶과 주체를 구성하는 힘을 가진 것으로 보고자 한다.

These days, old stories are read or run but there are some places where the stories are performed. They are public libraries. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the current state of storytelling programs and plan to present ways for vitalizing the programs for old stories in the public libraries in Seoul. First, this paper examines the locations and problems of the old storytelling programs. The typical storytelling programs are old storytelling programs and narration of fairy tales. Old storytelling programs are thought to be replaced or subset of fairy tales programs. The classes for fairy tales programs are almost four times as much as old storytelling programs. The programs of narration of fairy tales are thought to be more enjoyable and educational. This paper studies the cases of old storytelling programs in public libraries to find internal problems and suggest alternatives. The case which is examined here are three: Doggabigamtu, the storyteller in Songpa Children’s Library, Arumdaun grandma, storytellers whom Advanced Center for Korean Studies selected and educated, Unarae, the volunteers who read books in the libraries. They feel some pressure to tell the old stories when they thing the tradition stories must be perfect and fixed. I propose “sharing stories” on the base of old stories to release the pressure. It is plan to open old story treasure warehouse to provide the sources of new stories. Oral situation is not a barrier but a new possibility. Finally, this paper shows the meanings of the project and other questions remaining unanswered.
