본 연구는 판소리가 전통연희물에서 고급전통예술로 변화해왔음을 전제로 하고, 앞으로의 판소리는 고급전통예술에서 대중예술로의 전위적인 변화가 필요함을 밝히고 있다. 판소리의 첫 번째 커다란 변화의 방향은 ‘보고 즐기는 것’으로부터 ‘듣는 것’으로의 전환이었다. 판소리는 분명 이야기와 음악의 수준 높은 결합으로 이루어지는 대중성과 예술성의 바탕위에서 발전했지만, 판소리가 근대적 의미의 고급예술의 의미를 획득하는 과정에서 판소리는 점차 ‘듣는 예술’로 자리매김한 것으로 보인다. 판소리가 ‘듣는 예술’로 기울면서, 판소리는 수준 높은 음악성과 예술성을 확보할 수 있었지만, 동시에 대중성과 흥행성은 잃어버리게 된 것으로 보인다. 유성기 음반의 등장으로 판소리 향유층의 미의식이 다변화되면서 판소리는 조금씩 ‘고급전통예술’의 모습을 갖추기 시작했으며, 급격한 소멸의 위기에서 무형문화재의 지정으로 말미암아 ‘순수예술’ 혹은 ‘고급전통예술’로 그 영역을 확보하게 된다. 그리고 판소리는 그 이후부터 대중과 점차 괴리된 모습을 가지게 된다. 판소리가 이 시대에도 생명력을 가지는 예술이 되기 위해서는 ‘성음 놀이’ 즉, 음악으로의 경도에서 조금은 벗어나 보편적인 이야기의 힘을 확보하고, 당대와 호흡할 수 있는 시의성을 가지며, 더 나아가 대중과 호흡할 수 있는 재미, 즉 대중성을 확보해야 할 것으로 보았다. 이러한 모습은 지금의 창작판소리 현장 곳곳에서 확인할 수 있는 것이다. 판소리가 대중성을 확보하여 진정한 의미의 대중예술이 될 때, 소리판에는 분명 판소리를 ‘즐기는 청중’이 다시금 모여들게 될 것이다. 그리고 판소리를 ‘즐기는 청중’은 보편적인 이야기의 힘을 통해 확보될 수 있다. 창작판소리가 시대의 문제와 일상의 모습을 구현한 긍정적인 인물 형상이 담긴 이야기를 가지고, 전통판소리가 쌓아온 수준 높은 음악성을 확보할 때, 이 새로운 창작판소리는 진정한 의미의 판소리 고전이 될 수 있을 것으로 예상할 수 있다.

This research presupposes that pansori has changed from traditional theatricals to high-grade traditional art and reveals that pansori needs an avant-garde change from high-grade traditional art to popular art. The direction of a great change of pansori is a conversion from “what is seen and enjoyed” to “what is heard.” Although pansori is clearly based on popular appeal and artistic value that are formed by a sophisticated combination of stories and music, it appears that pansori has gradually become “hearing art” in the process in which pansori acquired the meaning of high-grade traditional art in the modernistic sense. As pansori has leaned toward ‘hearing art,” pansori was able to secure the high-level musicality and artistic value, but at the same time it appears that it has lost popular appeal and box-office value. As the aesthetic consciousness of the people enjoying pansori has diversified with the appearance of gramophone records, pansori began to have appearance of “high-grade traditional art and has secured the realm of “pure art” or “high-grade traditional art” in the imminent crisis of extinction as it was designated as intangible cultural assets. And afterward, pansori has the appearance of being separated from the general public. In order for pansori to become art that has vital power in this age as well, it should secure the power of universal stories deviating slightly from leaning toward music, have timeliness share breath in this age, and by extension, have fun to share breath with people, i.e. to secure popular appeal. These aspects can be confirmed here and there in today’s creative pansori fields. When pansori has secured popular appeal and become popular art in the true sense of the word, “the audience enjoying” pansori will gather again in the scene of pansori. And “the audience enjoying” pansori can be secured through the power of universal stories. When creative pansori equipped with stories containing positive character images realizing problems of the times and scenes from daily life has secured musicality of high standard that has been accumulated by traditional pansori, it can be expected that this new creative pansori can become pansori classic in the true sense of the word.
