본고에서는 용녀귀환설화가 삽화 형태로 포함된 ‘고난극복형’ 우렁색시 12편을 대상으로 신화적 성격을 고찰했다. 용녀귀환 삽화가 포함된 고난극복형 우렁색시 설화는 ‘초월적 능력을 갖는 용녀와 인간 남성의 혼인, 권력자의 횡포, 용녀의 초월적 능력을 통한 문제 해결’이 작품 내적 질서를 통해 신화적 성격이 있음을 밝혔다. 본고에서는 용녀인 우렁이의 수신적 성격, 신화적 맥락, 여신이 필요했던 가난과 미혼의 정황, 인간의 몸을 입은 용녀가 ‘시간성’을 통해 신성성을 드러내는 방식에 주목했다. 이를 통해 신이·풍요·환상·마법이 필요한 인간 존재의 한계적 상황에 대한 문학적 형상화 방식을 논의했다.

The purpose of this article is to reveal the mythological character of the ‘Snail Maiden-Overcoming Suffering Type’ in which Yong-Nyeo episodes(용녀전승) are included. This article argues that “Snail Maiden” story’s mythological character can be detected in the ‘marriage between Yong-Nyeo, who is a goddess, and a man’, ‘tyranny of a powerful man’, and the ‘problem-solving through Yong-Nyeo’s transcendental ability.’ In this study I focused on the Snail Maiden’s transcendental ability, a man’s circumstances of poverty and being unmarried, which require the help of goddess, and the hierophany of the Snail Maiden. What is examined ultimately in this paper is the mode of literary imagery about the critical situations, which need miracle, abundance, magic and fantasy.
