주인공이 뒤늦게야 출현하는 현상은 설화 문학에서 보편적이지 않지만 제주도 신화에서는 간혹 나타난다. 본고는 <할망본풀이>와 <문전본풀이>에서 주인공의 지연된 출현이 텍스트의 다른 요소들을 적극 소환하는 전반적 해석 과정과 관련이 있으며, 나아가 텍스트가 구성해내는 가치의 재현 방식을 규정하고 있다고 본다. 이를 위해 발단부에서 텍스트에 등장하는 인물을 잠재적 주체로, 이후에 등장하여 수행에 성공하는 인물을 실현된 주체로 구분한다. 본고는 두 주체의 가치가 <할망본풀이>에서는 저승할망과 이승할망을 통해 ‘자연’과 ‘문화’로 재현되고 있고, <문전본풀이>에서는 남선비와 녹디생인을 통해 ‘그들’과 ‘우리’로 재현되고 있다고 주장한다. 각 텍스트에서 나타나는 이러한 의미항들은 대등한 것이 아니라 비대칭적이다. 각각의 가치들은 다시 ‘위험과 안전’의 메타약호로 재해석 가능하다. 이때 위험은 주변적 가치를, 안전은 중심적 가치를 가진다. <할망본풀이>를 보건대 제주도의 출산·양육의 세계에서는 자연=위험=악, 문화=안전=선의 동일시를 읽을 수 있다. <문전본풀이>에서는 가정과 가택의 문제에 대해 외부=그들=악, 내부=안전=선의 동일시를 추론할 수 있다. 이 위험은 없어지는 것이 아니라 관리되어야 하는 것으로, 상황에 따라서 위험과 안전의 관계는 전복될 수도 있다. 결론에서는 그러한 역동적 관계의 문화적 의의에 대해 다루면서 두 명의 주체, 혹은 복수 주인공이 위험과 안전을 경합하는 가치로 구현하고 있음을 보여준다.

Hero’s late appearance of a story is rare phenomenon in folk tales. This is often occurred in Jeju myths. I call the phenomenon ‘delayed appearance of a hero’, which is occurred in Halmangbonpuri and Munjeonbonpuri. This paper is aimed at to prove that the delayed appearance of a hero is related to whole interpretation process and a way of representation on competing value in the two myths. I make a division two subject, one is potential subject who appears in the introduction, and the other is realized subject who comes on in the latter part. This paper says that the value in Halmangbonpuri is represented by ‘nature’ and ‘culture’ through the two subject, Jeosunghalmang[the grandmother for dead children] and Isunghalmang[the grandmother for living children]. while the value in Munjeonbonpuri is represented by ‘they’ and ‘we’ through the two subject, Namseonbi and Nokdisaengin. These meanings are not equal but asymmetry in their relations. Each meanings are integrated into the meta codes of ‘danger’ and ‘safe’ at the higher level. We can read the equation of nature=danger=evil and culture=safe=good in the world of childbirth and rearing in Jeju, while we can infer the equation of outside=they=evil and inside=we=good in the world of home and house. We can infer them from the two subjects relations. The ‘danger’ is allocated at minor value while the ‘safe’ major value. The danger must be controled because it does not vanish. So the relation of danger with safe can be turn over. It depends on the situation. Finally this paper deals with the cultural significance of the dynamic relations: the two subject or heroes are the main reason behind the competing value of danger and safe.
