구술성(orality)은 개념적 차원과 연구 방법의 차원에서 서사이론의 전개 과정에 중요한 영향을 미쳤다. 구조주의 이후의 서사이론은 이야기하기의 상호성이 지닌 역동적 의미 생성의 힘에 주목해왔고, 구술성의 개념과 활발히 교섭하면서 이야기와 지식, 그리고 주체의 문제에 관한 새로운 사유 가능성을 열어나갔다. 이 글에서는 이 같은 흐름 가운데 특히 두 가지 경향을 중점적으로 다루는데, 그 하나는 후기구조주의 텍스트이론이다. 텍스트를 문자언어나 기술성(literacy)과 결부시키는 일반적 통념과 달리, 실제로 텍스트성(textuality)은 기록된 ‘책’의 권위와 ‘저자’의 지위를 탈중심화하는 구술적 지향과 맞닿아 있다. 후기구조주의 텍스트이론은 말하기와 글쓰기의 표면적 대립을 넘어 근대적인 기술성을 비판적으로 성찰하는 구술적 사고의 탈근대적 가능성을 분명하게 보여준다. 그리고 다른 하나는 구술성의 가치와 구술적인 연구 방법(면담, 대화, 생애 이야기 등)을 좀 더 전면에 내세우는 내러티브 탐구 경향이다. 내러티브 탐구에서는 근대적 지식의 탈맥락성과 추상성을 극복하고 구체적인 삶의 세계와의 연결을 회복하려는 이야기적 지식의 구술적 지향을 확인할 수 있다. 이런 지향은 연구자(앎의 주체)와 연구 참여자(앎의 대상) 간의 상호작용을 중시하고 이야기하는 자와 듣는 자사이의 공감적 유대를 확장하는 관계적 관점으로 나타난다. 내러티브 탐구에는 또한 연구자로서의 사회적 참여와 윤리적 실천을 향한 열망이 강하게 작용하고 있다. 이 글에서는 치료와 의학 분야의 내러티브 탐구 사례를 통해 이 점을 구체적으로 살펴보고, 그 의의에 대해 생각해본다. 이 작업은 서사성과 구술성이 지닌 긴밀한 관계를 이해하고, 이를 바탕으로 하여 융합적이고 교차학문적인 다양한 연구 수행과 실천적 작업들로 나아가기 위한 모색의 성격을 띤다.
Orality has influenced the expansion of narrative theory in both conceptual and methodical area. Narrative theories after structuralism have payed attention to dynamic power of telling stories producing meanings, and opened up the way of new thinking about 'storytelling', 'knowledge'(savoir narratif), 'subject'(the knowing and writing subject) and so on. Among others, this essay focuses on the two fields, post-structural text theory and narrative inquiry. Contrary to common notion, textuality is so connected to orality in the sense of deconstructing authority of written 'book' and it's 'author'. Post-structural text theory shows the potentiality of orality that critically reflects on modern literacy. On the other hand, narrative inquiry stands for orality more clearly in conceptual and medial aspect. Narrative inquiry is not only using the means of storytelling(interview, conversation, life story etc.), but also heading for narrative knowledge which regains the connection between life and knowledge, against modern knowledge that is abstract and context-free. It takes relational perspective which regards highly mutual interaction and empathic bond between researchers and research participants. Narrative inquiry also exposes researcher's longing and passion for ethical practice and social participation. This essay explains these aspects concretely through the examples of narrative therapy and narrative medicine. That is important in order to grope for various cross-disciplinary studies and practices based on profound understanding of the relation between narrativity and orality.
