인지과학 내의 다양한 연구 분야에서는 오래전부터 인간의 마음이 작동하는 원리를 밝혀내기 위해서는 서사에 주목해야 함을 강조해왔다. 인간의 마음이 기계적으로 작동하는 것이 아니라 서사적이고 문학적으로 작동한다고 본 것이다. 인간의 마음이 서사적이며 문학적으로 작동한다는 전제에 동의한다면, 인간의 마음에 대한 연구는 문학 연구자들의 중요한 몫이 된다. 이 글에서는 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 하여, 다음의 두 가지 질문에 대한 대답을 고민해 보았다. 첫째, 인간 마음 작동의 기본 원리가 되는 서사의 본질은 무엇인가. 둘째, 인간의 마음에 대한 과학적 연구에 기여할 수 있는 문학 연구의 방향은 무엇인가. 먼저 2절에서는 스키마 이론에 기반한 ‘이야기 이해’의 인지 과정에 주목하면서, ‘치료적 관점’의 이야기 이해 연구가 갖는 의의와 서사의 본질을 탐색하였다. 치료적 관점의 이야기 이해 연구에는 인지기제로서의 서사 연구가 문학 연구와 별개일 수 없다는 시각이 전제되어 있다. 그것은 문학 작품의 심층구조 내지 서사가 인간의 마음 구조를 가장 구체적으로 형상화시켜 줄 수 있다고 보기 때문이다. 많은 인지과학자들이 문학 작품의 심층구조, 문학 작품의 서사가 인간 마음 구조의 형태를 가늠하게 해주는 최적의 자료라고 보았다. 이뿐 아니라 한층 더 나아가 문학 작품의 서사를 분석해 놓으면, 그것을 통해 문제적인 인지구조를 변화시키는 데에도 활용할 수 있다는 관점을 보여주고 있다. 물론 이때의 치료적인 기능은 보다 ‘탄탄한 인과관계’의 고리를 구성할 수 있도록 도움을 주는 수준에 머물러 있다. 그러나 만약 기존 인지과학 연구의 한계를 넘어서서 ‘형태적 요소’와 ‘의미적 요소’를 모두 포함하는 작품의 심층구조 분석이 가능해 진다면 서사는 단지 ‘탄탄한 인과관계’ 고리를 제공해 주는 것 이상의 역할을 할 수 있을 것이다. 다음으로 3절에서는 인기기제로서의 서사 연구에서 구비설화가 갖는 중요성을 논하면서, 문학 연구와 인지과학 연구의 접점을 모색하였다. 우선 인지기제로서의 서사를 연구하기에 가장 적합한 장르로서 ‘구비설화’에 주목하였다. 구비설화는 인지기제로서의 서사가 갖는 형태적·의미적 요소, 문학적 속성을 탐색하게 해주는 최적의 자료라고 할 수 있다. 이에 따라 설화 <호랑이 눈썹>의 심층구조 분석을 통해 인지기제로서의 서사 분석의 예시를 제시하였다. 형태적 요소와 의미적 요소의 결합으로 구성된 작품의 심층구조를 구성하여 ‘문학적 속성’을 지닌 인지구조의 모델을 제안한 것이다.

In cognitive science, the necessity to pay attention to narrative in order to uncover the principles in which the human mind works has been emphasized. It is highlighted that the human mind does not operate mechanically, but works in a narrative and literary way. Therefore research on the human mind is an important part of literature researchers. In this article, based on this issue, I have tried to answer the following two questions. First, what is the essence of narrative that is the basic principle of human mind work. Second, what is the direction of literature research that can contribute to scientific research on the human mind? In chapter 2, focusing on the cognitive process of 'understanding stories' based on schema theory, the significance of study in therapeutic point of view and the essence of narrative are studied. In the therapeutic point of view study, it is presupposed that the narrative research as the cognitive mechanism can not be separated from the literature research. This is because the in-depth structure and narrative of the literary works can be seen as the most concrete form of human mind structure. Many cognitive scientists have seen that the in-depth structure of literary works and narratives of literary works are the best sources for determining the form of human mind structure. In addition to this, further analysis of the in-depth structure of literary works shows that it can be used to change the problematic cognitive structure. The therapeutic function at this time remains at the level of helping to form a more 'causal relationship'. However, if it is possible to go beyond the limits of existing cognitive science research and to analyze in depth the literary works that include both 'morphological elements' and 'semantic elements', narrative can play more than just providing a 'strong causal link'. In chapter 3. the importance of folktale in narrative research as cognition mechanism and the contact point between literature research and cognitive science research are discussed. First of all, I focused attention on 'folktale' as the most suitable genre to study narrative as a cognitive mechanism. It can be said that folktale is the optimal material for searching the morphological, semantic and literary attributes of the narrative as the cognitive mechanism. Thus, the narrative analysis as a cognitive mechanism is presented through the deep structure analysis of < the tiger's eyebrows >. This paper proposes a model of the cognitive structure with 'literary attributes' by constructing the deep structure of the work composed of the combination of the morphological element and the semantic element.
