본 연구는 단형서사라 불리는 일련의 텍스트들 중 전통 설화를 구현한 것들에 집중한 연구이다. 그 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 우선, 전통 설화가 단형서사들 속에서 활용된 방식을 살펴 보았다. 그 방식으로는, 애초에 설화 화자의 목소리를 그대로 드러낸 경우부터, 논설자로서의 목소리가 설화 속 화자나 인물의 목소리를 잠식한 경우, 그리고 아예 논설자로서의 목소리가 설화 화자의 목소리를 압도한 경우 등이 발견되었다. 전통 설화를 받아들여 단형서사 작자가 말하고자 했던 것은, 개화 문제에 대한 그 나름대로의 입장 표명 및 특정 계층에 대한 비판, 보편적 윤리 고취 등 자기갱신적 성격의 계몽으로 정리할 수 있었다. 전통 설화 활용은 근대초 지식인들이 대중에게 더 가까이 다가가고자 한 글쓰기 전략의 결과물이었다. 물론 그들이 전통 설화를 깊이 있게 해석한 상태에서 이를 활용한 것은 아니었다. 설화 내용보다는 그것을 통해 말하고자 한 바가 더 중요했기 때문이다. 그러나 지식인을 매개로 하여 전통 설화가 근대초 언론 지면을 통해 대중과 만나게 된 것 자체는 전통설화의 근대적 대응이라는, 의미 있는 한 양상이라 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

This study is focused on a series of texts using folktales, out of those called “short narratives”. The results of this study are as follows. Above all, this study examines the aspects of the use of traditional folktales in short narratives. As for the aspects, cases have been found where the tale narrator’s voice is revealed without concealment from the beginning, where the voice as a controversialist undermines the voice of the narrator or characters in a tale, and where the voice as a controversialist even overwhelms the voice of the narrator. We can summarize what the creators of short narratives tried to say by using traditional folktales as enlightenment with a self-reforming which includes their own expressions of the problem of enlightenment, criticism of particular classes, and encouragement of universal ethics. The use of traditional folktales was a product of the intellectuals’ writing strategies with which they tried to come close to the populace. Of course, it is not the case that they used traditional folktales while properly understanding them. This is because what was important to them was what they tried to say with folktales rather than their contents. However, the very fact that folktales came to meet the populace via the pages of the press in the beginning of the early modern period with intellectuals as media can be considered a meaningful aspect of the early modern transformation of traditional folktales.
