본고는 한국 최초의 동요곡집인 『반달』을 소개하고, 작곡집에 수록된 10편의 동요가 지니고 있는 특성을 살펴보았다. 특히 음악적인 측면, 문학적인 측면, 그리고 창작 의도 등을 고려하여 동요 속에서 전통의 단절과 계승이 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 알아보았다. 그 결과 음악적인 측면에서는 기본적으로 서양식 음악 어법을 따랐음을 알았다. 반면에 창작 의도와 노랫말을 보면, 전통적인 요소를 계승하는 면이 크다고 할 수 있다. 상대적으로 단순하고 소박한 동요의 경우 새로운 것의 영향을 받기보다는 기존의 것을 계승하는 측면이 더 많았다. 그리고 이를 <반달>, <설날>, <꼬부랑 할머니> 등을 통해 확인하였다. 이어서 본고에서는 『반달』에 수록된 동요들이 이후 유성기 음반에 수록된 양상을 제시하였다. 다른 곡들이 대부분 원곡과 동일한 것에 반해 <반달>은 이후 원곡과 달라진 부분이 있음을 밝혔다. 그리고 이는 많은 이들이 <반달>을 향유하는 과정에서 좀 더 편하게 자연스럽게 부를 수 있는 방법으로 변화가 진행되었다고 할 수 있다. 이제 동요곡집 『반달』의 전모가 드러남으로써 우리나라 초창기 창작동요의 위상과 의미를 새롭게 인식하게 된 것이 본 논문의 성과라 할 수 있다.

This paper introduces Korea's first book of children's songs, Bandal(Half Moon) and discuss the characteristics of it. Ten songs is included in this book. In consideration of music, literary aspects, and writing intention, the severance and succession of tradition has been examined. As a result, the children's songs in Bandal accepted Western music forms. On the other hand, writing intention and lyrics inherit the traditional heritage. It can be confirmed in some children's songs. Next, the aspects of children's songs in phonograph records are presented in this paper. Another songs aren't different from original songs whereas the song, 'Bandal' is changed. In the process of enjoyment, 'The Bandal' is changed easy to sing. In this paper, Korea's first book of children's songs is given the entire picture. Therefore, the meaning and status of Korea's composing children's songs can be recognized.
