특정 지역의 민요는 해당 지역사회의 총체적 환경과 삶의 역사를 반영한다. 그 중에서도 아리랑과 같은 보편적 예술형식은 고대로부터 전승되어오던 지역의 특성과 함께 다른 지역과 소통해온 역사를 고스란히 드러내고 있는 전통적 노래의 형태라 할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 문경지역 민요전승의 기반을 살펴보는 가운데, 문경아리랑의 위상과 ‘선별적 전통’으로의 자리매김 과정을 ‘재발견’의 맥락에서 밝히고자 하였다. 문경아리랑은 지역적 특성을 잘 반영하고 있는 노래이다. 더욱이 현대사회에서도 살아 생동하는 유기체로서 강한 생명력을 보여주고 있다. 충청북도 산간과 강원도와 인접한 문경지역은 아리랑의 본체로 일컬어지는 메나리 계통의 노동요가 자연스럽게 전승되어 왔으며, 여기에 아리랑의 대중문화적 속성이 강화되는 조건 속에서 전국적인 대표사설로 자리 잡기에 이르렀다. 또한 최초의 서양악보로 기록된 헐버트의 아리랑 역시 문경아리랑의 사설을 앞세우고 있다. 최근 30여년간 문경아리랑의 ‘재발견’이 이루어졌는데, 여기에는 문경 새재의 대규모 관광지화, 헐버트의 아리랑, 아리랑연합회와 전공학자, 문경새재아리랑보존회, 지역정치에서의 대규모국책사업 유치경쟁 등이 변수로 작용해왔음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이제는 아리랑의 기반이 되는 민요 전통을 다양한 각도에서 대중화하고 발전시키는 데 집중하는 것이 바람직할 것이며, 특정지역 아리랑이라는 틀에 갇혀 민요전승의 기반을 해체하고 새로운 아리랑으로 창출되는 것이 반드시 옳은 방향은 아니라는 사실을 주목해야 할 것이다. 한민족의 아리랑은 각 지역의 아리랑이 더욱 활성화되고 대중적 기반을 확대하는 가운데 발전하는 것이지, 살아있는 전승력을 확보하지 못한 상태에서 특정한 방향으로 정책적으로 밀어붙이기만 해서는 살아있는 전통문화로서 가치를 확보하기 쉽지 않음을 상기할 필요가 있다.

Folk song of specific area reflects the comprehensive set of environment of the applicable regional society and the history of life in the region. Among them, universal art form such as Arirang can be considered the form pertaining to traditional song that discloses the history of communicating with other region as is as well as manifesting the characteristics of the region that was passed down from the ancient times. While examining the basis of passing down folk song in the Mungyeong region, this paper seeks to identify the status of Mungyeong Arirang and to disclose the process of consolidating its position as ‘selective tradition’ from the ‘re-discovery’ context. Mungyeong Arirang is the song that effectively reflects regional characteristics. Moreover, it shows powerful life energy as the organism that is alive and moving in the modern society as well. Mungyeong region that is close to the mountainous area in Chungcheongbukdo and Gangwondo was passed down naturally when it comes to the labor song of the Maenari genre which is considered the origin of Arirang. On top of this, it consolidated its position as the nationwide representative song amidst the condition in which Arirang's popular culture attributes strengthened. Moreover, Hulbert's Arirang which is recorded as the first Western music note cites Mungyeong Arirang. Going forth, it is recommended to focus on the popularization and advancement of the folk tradition that serves as the basis of Arirang from diverse angles. It is necessary to realize that dismantling the basis for passing down folk song by getting locked up in the frame of Arirang of specific region and for getting created as a new Arirang is not necessarily the right direction. Arirang of the Korean people advances as the Arirang of each region becomes even more vitalized and grows while expanding the popular base. Likewise, there is a need to mention that it is not easy to secure the value as a traditional culture that is alive merely by pushing towards one specific direction on the policy level without having secured the live passing down capability.
