본 연구의 목적은 지금까지 한국어교육 논의에서 ‘맥락’의 개념은 어떻게 다루어져 왔는가를 비판적으로 검토하고 맥락을 다룬 연구가 어떤 방향으로 개진되어야 하는가를 모색하는 것에 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 외국어교육학에서 맥락의 개념들이 어떻게 의미화되어 왔는가를 연구 분야별로 살펴보았다. 그 다음으로, 2000년 이후에 나온 한국어교육 연구물을 귀납적으로 분석하여 맥락의 개념이 어휘문법 교육, 기능 교육, 문화문학 교육, 다문화 교육, 평가론, 교재론 등의 분야에서 다층적으로 사용되고 있음을 규명하였고 각각 어떻게 개념화하였는가를 검토하였다. 이를 통한 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 맥락과 결합한 용어가 잘못 조어되어 쓰이고 있는 경우가 있었으며 때로는 부정확하게 사용되고 있었다. 둘째, 맥락의 개념을 정밀하게 정의하고 연구 분야별로 정교화하지 않은 채 사용해 왔다. 셋째, 한국어교육 분야별로 맥락의 개념을 다룬 빈도의 차이가 컸는데 절반가량이 어휘문법 교육론에서 이루어졌다. 이와 같은 분석 결과를 토대로 하여 본 연구는 향후 한국어교육 연구에서 맥락과 관련한 논의는 구성적이고 해석적인 개념으로 재구되어야 하고, 동일한 교육 영역 내에서는 그 개념이 표준화되고 정교화되어야 함을 제안하였다.

The purpose of this study is to critically examine how the concept of ‘context’ has been treated in the discussion of Korean language education and to find out what direction the research on the context should be taken. In order to do this, this study looked into the Korean language education researches after 2000 were analyzed, and it was found that the concept of context in Korean language education was used in multi-layer fields. The further investigation of how the conceptualization of context in each of these fields led to the results as follows. First, terms combined with context were overused. Second, the concept of context was adopted after neither being precisely defined nor being closely elaborated. Third, there was a great difference in the frequency of studying the concept of context in the field of Korean language education. Based on these findings, this study suggests that the future discussions related to the context matter in the research of Korean language education should be reconstructed into those on a compositional and interpretive concept, and that the concept should be standardized.
