서술성 명사는 명사임에도 서술성을 지녀 문장 구성 시 논항을 취할 뿐 아니라 그 자체로 절 단위의 의미를 압축하고 있다는 특성을 함께 지닌다. 이러한 특성은 서술성 명사가 포함된 문장 단위는 물론, 텍스트 전체의 정보 구조에도 영향을 미치는 요인이 된다. 본 연구는 서술성 명사의 이러한 특성에 주목하여 서술성의 개념을 ‘문법적 은유(grammatical metaphor)’의 관점에서 고찰하고, 이를 텍스트 읽기 맥락에 적용하여 서술성 명사에 의해 텍스트 응집성이 실현되는 사례를 분석해 보았다. 텍스트 분석 결과, 서술성 명사는 인접해 있는 문장 간 의미를 연결하는 방식, 일정한 의미 분류 체계를 형성하여 여러 내용을 응집하는 방식, 선행하는 절 단위의 의미를 글의 다른 부분에서 서술성 명사로 압축함으로써 여러 문단을 가로지르며 의미를 연결하는 방식 등으로 응집성을 실현할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 서술성 명사에 대한 본고의 확장적 관점은 서술성 명사의 형태·통사적 정보 외에 의미적 정보까지 다룰 수 있다는 이점이 있으며, 이를 바탕으로 텍스트 표면적 응집 장치뿐만 아니라 텍스트의 정보 구조를 반영하는 서술성 명사에 주목하여 텍스트를 읽게 되면 글의 구조 및 내용 이해에 도움이 될 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.

Despite being a noun, predicative nouns have a predicative character, which not only takes an argument when composing a sentence, but also has the characteristic of compressing the clausal meaning itself. These characteristics affect not only the sentence containing the predicative noun but also the information structure of the text as a whole. This study focuses on these characteristics of predicative nouns, examines it in terms of ‘grammatical metaphor’, and analyzes text cohesion by predicative nouns. As a result, it is confirmed that the text cohesion is realized by the way of connecting the meanings of adjacent sentences, forming a certain semantic classification structure to coalesce the various contents, and condensing the meaning of the preceding clause into the predicative nouns. The extended view of predicative nouns has the advantage of dealing with semantic information of predicative nouns. Based on this, it can be said that it is meaningful to read the text by paying attention to the predicative nouns that reflect the logic flow of the text, and it can help understanding the structure and contents of the text.
