이 글은 구비문학과 다문화주의와의 상관관계를 통해 구비문학 연구의 새로운 시각을 정립하기 위한 것이다. 다문화주의는 중심문화가 아니라 주변문화, 지배문화가 아니라 피지배문화의 정체성이 제대로 기능할 수 있는 상태를 지향한다. 그런데 구비문학은 문학이라는 범주 속에서 중심문학이 아니라 주변문학, 지배문학이 아니라 피지배문학의 자리에 위치해 있다. 따라서 구비문학과 다문화주의의 이러한 상동성을 고려하자면, 구비문학자는 구비문학의 문학적 정체성을 정밀하게 논구하여 문학의 범주 속에서 구비문학이 제대로 기능할 수 있도록 하는 데 더 힘을 기울여야 할 것이다. 이와 관련하여 필자는 다문학주의라는 용어를 제안한다. 다문학주의는 기록문학 위주의 문학관을 벗어나게 해줄 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 여러 민족의 다양한 문학을 대등하게 보는 시각을 제시해 줄 수 있을 것이기 때문이다. 아울러 본 글에서는 다문화주의가 주는 시사점 중, 구비문학이 다문화사회에서 어떻게 쓰일 수 있고, 어떤 사회문화적 기능을 해야 할 것인가를 논의하여 다문화주의 관점을 적용한 실제 연구의 사례를 제시하였다.

The goal of this paper is to establish a new viewpoint for researching oral literature through the interrelationship between oral literature and multiculturalism. Multiculturalism aims to reach a state in which the identity of peripheral cultures, not the central culture, of subordinate cultures, not the dominant culture, is allowed to function properly. In this regard, oral literature occupies a space similar within the category of literature to that of the peripheral, subordinates cultures, not the central, dominant cultures. If we take into consideration this homologousness of oral literature and multiculturalism, then it is clear that scholars of oral literature should focus their efforts on detailed and thorough discussion of the literary identity of oral literature, allowing oral literature to function properly within the category of literature. Along the same lines, I propose a new term: multiliteraturism. Multiliteraturism will not only allow us to free ourselves from the view of literature centered on written literature, but it will also provide us a new viewpoint from which we can view as equal the varied literatures of many ethnic groups.
