현재 한국의 전체 인구에서 외국인이 차지하는 비중은 약 2% 정도로 노동자가 대부분이며, 한국인 남성과 결혼한 여성들도 있다. 이들이 자신들의 구비문학을 만들어 낼 정도의 공동체를 형성했다고 보이지는 않는다. 단기간 체류하는 외국인 노동자가 대부분이기 때문에 이들이 가입해 있는 공동체에 전통성은 상대적으로 약한 것으로 보인다. 즉 현재의 한국사회가 다문화시대로 완전히 진입했다고 보기는 어렵고 다문화시대의 정황들이 나타나고 있다고 판단할 수 있다. 이러한 상황에서 구비예술적 문화연구를 충실하게 수행할 방법은 없어 보인다. 하지만 현재의 한국의 구비문학의 인식론적 전제에 대해서는 지적할 수 있는 것이 있다. 첫째 민족적인 연구범위를 좀더 확장해야 할 필요가 있다. 민족적 구비문학을 지금까지 지향해 왔다면 좀더 보편적으로 인간 문화 일반에 대한 연구, 혹은 좀더 좁혀서 국가 단위는 적어도 뛰어 넘는 지역적 차원의 연구를 구상해 볼 수가 있다. 이러한 점은 다문화시대로 진입한 미국이나 독일의 구비문학 혹은 민속학계를 보면 잘 나타난다. 미국의 민속학계는 연구대상을 일찌감치 미국에 살고 있는 모든 사람들을 대상으로 하였으며, 최근에 들어서서는 어떤 공통점이라도 가지고 있는 집단을 연구대상으로 간주하고 있다. 독일에서는 유럽 전역으로 연구범위를 확장함과 동시에 독일 내부의 외국계 독일인과 독일인들 사이의 의사소통 과정에도 연구의 초점을 맞추고 있다.

This article aims to know the direction of study of the oral literature in the time of multiculture in Korea. The oral literature in my article is used to cover the informal oral aesthetic expression of the person in the everyday life, including the traditional verbal culture. In America is the concept ‘oral literature’ is not used any more, but in Korea it is used normally. It is very hard to say if Korean society is in the stage of the multiculture nowadays. In Korea living foreigner are about 2% of the total population. Because they live normally only for four years, the boundary of the community is not so firm. It means that there is not so much verbal art to study among the foreigner. However the old presupposition of the Korean Oral Literature, to study the national oral literature, should be changed. The national boundary of the study is more extended to cover the non-korean population. Already the american folklore society or the german folklore society considered the oral literature of the foreigners or the natives as the object to study.
