이 글에서는 임석재 채록 민요 418편을 기능별로 분류하고, 그 사설의 특징과 가치를 밝혔다. 임석재 채록 민요는 노동요가 215편으로 가장 많은 수를 차지하고, 다음으로 유희요가 158편 조사되었으며, 의식요가 32편, 기타 민요가 13편 조사되었다. 이는 60년대에서 70년대에 이르는 자료로서, 당시의 민요 전승 상황을 알려줄 뿐만 아니라, 이후 조사 채록된 자료들과 비교하여 민요의 변이 실태를 살펴볼 수 있다는 점에서 매우 소중한 자료이다. 임석재 채록 민요는 다음과 같은 가치를 지니고 있다. 첫째, 임석재 채록 민요는 거의 대부분 인공 조건보다는 자연 조건에서 조사된 자료들이다. 그런 만큼 그 사설에는 일하는 사람들의 솔직한 심경과 놀이하는 사람들의 노골적인 감정들이 꾸밈없이 그대로 표현되어 있다. 둘째, 임석재 채록 민요는 원래의 민요 기능을 담고 있는 민요의 현장에서 채록된 것이 많아 현장의 다양한 상황과 각종 자연스런 소리들이 섞여 있다. 셋째, 임석재 채록 민요의 사설은 현재 전승되는 민요보다 고형의 모습을 보여준다. 넷째, 임석재 채록 민요에는 일제 초기 음반에만 남아 있을 뿐 전승이 끊어진 소리들이나 음반에서도 찾기 어려운 귀한 자료들이 다수 채록되었다. 또한 현재 전승되는 소리들이라 할지라도 근래의 사설보다는 대부분 훨씬 더 자세한 묘사와 서술을 갖춘 장편 사설들로 되어 있다. 이제 이들 다양하고 자연스러운 사설들을 문화재 지정 민요, 대중가요, 교육콘텐츠 등에 활용할 수 있도록 해야 한다. 또한 임석재 선생의 민요 조사 정신과 방법을 되살려 아직까지 살아있는 전통 민요를 다시금 조사 채록해내는 일 또한 더할 나위 없이 시급하고 절실하다.
This paper classified folksongs collected by Im Seokjae according to the funtion and investigated the literary characteristics of words. He collected 418 versions of various folksongs. They could be classified into four kinds - work song, rite song, play song and the other songs- according to the function. 215 versions of work song are collected, they are the most. And then 158 versions of play songs, 32 versions of rite songs, 13 versions of the other songs, collected. These songs have the high values, because they were performed in 60s and 70s and shows the traditional aspects. Moreover they could show the variation aspects comparing with songs performed after 80s. The values of folksongs collected by Im Seokjae are as follows;
1) They are performed mostly not in the artificial condition, but in the natural condition, so they express the frank emotion and thoughts in words.
2) They show the original function and circumstances, so the words are mixed with the natural sounds.
3) The words show the old forms.
4) There are many valuable versions, most of them can't here anymore, or most of them are longer and more concrete than the present versions. We should utilize them to the folksongs assigned as the cultural assets, the present songs, educational materials, and the culture contents. Above of all, it is very urgent and important to survey and collect the traditional folksongs with the methods of Im Seokjae
