본고는 1950년대 대중가요 가사에 나타나는 이국성의 양상과 특징을 고찰한 것이다. 이국성을 정의내리고 이국성을 이국정취와 이국정서로 세분화하여 각각의 양상 및 특징을 살펴보았다. 이국정취가 이국의 풍물을 통해 이국의 풍경을 시각적으로 재현하는데 목적이 있다면, 이국정서는 이국적인 풍물을 감정의 변화를 이끌어내는 기제로 활용하는 양상을 보여주었다. 또한 이국정취를 보여주는 노래가 궁극적으로 재미와 연결이 된다면, 이국정서를 표현한 노래는 감응을 통한 감정의 동요와 상관이 있다고 할 수 있다. 다음으로 본고에서는 이국적인 여성을 소재로 한 노래를 통해서 그 양상과 특징을 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 아시아계 여성과 서구 여성에 대한 당대 대중들의 이중적인 시선을 엿볼수 있었다. 아시아계 여성을 소재로 한 노래는 주로 하층 계급의 여성을 대상으로 하여 이국정취를 드러내고 있다면, 서구 여성을 소재로 한 노래는 작중 화자가 사랑하는 대상으로 설정한 이국 여성을 통해서 이국정서를 표현하였다. 이국 여성에 대한 이러한 이중적인 시선은 한국 남성들이 미국의 제국주의적인 시선을 답습하는 과정에서 나타난 현상이라고도 할 수 있다. 이제까지 1950년대 대중가요의 이국성은 대체로 미국 지향성으로 설명되었으나 실제로는 이국으로서의 미국에 대한 동경은 생각처럼 많지 않았다. 1950년대는 한국이 전쟁 후에 다양한 나라의 수많은 사람들을 직·간접적으로 만날 수 있었던 시기이다. 과도기적이고 혼란스러운 상황 속에서 대중가요는 당대인들의 이국에 대한 환상과 욕망을 담아냈다. 그리고 이는 대체로 이국정서보다는 ‘재미’를 추구하는 이국정취의 형태로 나타났다. 획일화 되지 않은 다양성의 공존, 이국에 대한 발칙한 상상과 호기심 등을 통해서 당대인들은 타자를 인식하고 주체를 형성해가기 시작하였다. 그러므로 1950년대 대중가요에 나타나는 이국성은 당대 대중들의 타자 경험에서 비롯한 자기 인식과 연결된다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다.

This paper tries to look into an aspect and meaning of the exoticism with the popular song lyrics. Particularly, it tries to pay attention with 1950's popular songs. The various Western civilizations which are flowed in through U.S. Armed Forces after the Korean War exert an effect on the popular song. Just, it comes into the civilization of not only U.S. but also Asia, Europe and Islamic area and it is loaded together and the popular song in 1950's shows the a bit peculiar appearance. That is, while the local customs and exogenous get mixed, the crop causes to be peculiar thing of the unknown nationality. A close analysis shows that it is not enough merely to say that they are strange. Recently, there was the attempt to look into the characteristics of exotic and unique of Korean popular music by the musical aspect in 1950's. However, there was still nearly no attempt to look into this kind of the exoticism through the lyric analysis on a full scale. Because the words of a song reflect the culture of the present age, it can become the important analysis object. Therefore, the significance tries to verify the substance of the exoticism in the popular song through the lyric analysis.
