설문대 할망은 제주우주의 창세여신이다. 조각조각 남겨진 할망 신화의 파편들과 각각의 자리를 탐색하여 할망의 이미지를 재구성해 보려 한다. 이 작업은 지금 우리에게 남겨진 파편들은 원형적 이미지라는 심층 심리학적 명제를 전제로 가능하다. 구체적인 방법론은 알란 던디스가 실용적으로 분류한 심리적-상징적 시각을 적용하여, 각각의 이미지를 연상확충하여 신화 파편에 담긴 은유와 상징의 이해를 꾀한다. 이를 통해 설문대 할망의 창조행위와 특질을 이해하려 한다.

Sôlmundae Halmang is the creator of Cheju Island. Halmang is a giantess; the highest mountain on the Island (Hanla Mountain is over 6,000 feet in elevation) reaches below her elbow, and the deepest river reaches near her ankle. Her diarrhea turns into 360 heights and her urine creates the channel. She is the land itself, and her presence is marked over the entire Island. Despite her explicit manifestation in the landscape, her cult has completely vanished. The detritus of Solmundae Halmang are sporadically fragmented with no apparent link among them. However, these fragments are precious mythological gems that have never completely disappeared from the psyche of the Cheju Islanders. These mere skeletal remains can be the valuable foundation on which the image of the age-old goddess can be built once more. To grasp Her image, every fragment will be examined within the specific site. This work is based on the proposition that the remnants fragments are archetypal images, which are not conscious inventions, but naturally born in our psyche. Putting some life into this skeleton with imagination and intuition is a way to re-call and re-member the goddess into our psyche again.
