설문대할망은 한라산을 베개로 삼고 누웠다가 山座로도 삼아 앉아있던 위대한 여신의 전형적 이미지를 간직하고 있었다. 山座에서 不動의 여신이었던 설문대할망이 산좌에서 내려옴으로써 위대한 어머니 신의 형상에서 멀어졌다. 山座로의 回歸가 실패로 귀결되고 裸身의 원초적 여신에서 옷을 입은 여신으로서의 변화양상을 보이다가 종국에 죽음을 맞이한 비극적 존재가 되었다. 원초적 여신은 예사 사람의 삶의 방식을 따라야 하는 거인 여신으로 다시 등장했으나 거듭된 죽음을 맞이하는 운명을 거스를 수 없는 존재가 되었다. 설문대할망의 전승은 지형의 유래담 정도로 약화되어 숭고해야할 전승의 의미가 비극적이고 골계적인 양상으로 굴절을 거듭했다. 제주 여신의 일대기가 전승을 거듭하는 과정에서 선문대가 되고 설문대가 되고 설멩두가 되고 선마선파가 되고 마고로 연결되면서 설문대할망의 정체성은 모호해지고 위대한 창조의 의미도 퇴색되었다.
