본고에서는 고전 서사에 두루 포착되는 개성적인 군소 인물형으로서의 사령형 인물이 개별 작품에 형상화된 양상을 고찰하고 그 전형성을 규정하여 보았다. 우선 사령이라는 인물 유형이 성립될 수 있었던 근거에 대해서는 군로사령과 저승차사의 두 범주로 나누어 살펴보았는데, 역사문헌으로부터는 군로사령의 성격과 복색, 그리고 포권 악용의 행태 및 불안정한 경제적 처지 등을 확인하였다. 종교경전에는 저승차사가 망자를 저승으로 데려가기 전에 반드시 생전의 공덕을 살펴 저승행의 방식을 정하였고, 그를 융숭하게 잘 대접하면 죽음에 문턱에서도 생사의 운명을 바꿀 수 있다는 내용이 제시되어 있었다. 작품에 등장하는 사령형 인물은 첫째, 직무를 충실히 이행하는 유형, 둘째, 뇌물의 유혹에 동요하는 유형, 셋째, 통속과 신성 양극단의 유형으로 분류하였다. 첫째 유형에는 <장화홍련전>, <이춘풍전>, <선심가(회심곡)>의 사령이 포함되며, 이들은 사납고 몰인정한 태도로 주어진 직무를 급히 서둘러 수행한다. 이러한 성향은 하급 관졸이라는 현실적인 처지에 기인하는 측면이 크다. 또한 첫째 유형은 여타 유형에 비해 등장인물로서의 개성 표출이 상당히 제한적인데, 이것은 죄인의 호송 이후에는 사령의 역할을 더 이상 필요로 하지 않는 다음 서사로 장면이 급전환되기 때문이다. 둘째 유형에 속하는 사령의 특징은 뇌물의 유혹에 동요하여, 죄인을 즉시 호송하라는 상관의 명을 충실히 수행하지 못한다는 것이다. 이 과정 중에 뇌물을 매개로 한 죄인-사령 간의 관계가 새로운 이야기 대목을 파생시키면서 사령형 인물의 개성이 보다 확실히 부각된다. 판소리·판소리계 소설 <춘향전>, 우화소설 <서동지전>, 노정기형 화랭이 무가 <군웅노정기>, 연명설화형 서사무가 <맹감본풀이>·<황천혼시(혼쉬굿)>·<장자풀이>, 연명형민담 <저승사자 대접하여 손자 구한 조부>·<저승차사 대접하여 명 이은 동방삭>, 망자천도형 무극 <사재삼성>·<사자굿> 등 대부분의 사령형 인물이 이 둘째 유형에 포함되며, 이들은 장르적 성격 및 작품에 따라 조금씩 다른 특색을 드러낸다. 마지막 셋째 유형에 속하는 사령형 인물은 통속성과 신성성의 양극단에 위치하는 만곡<군로사령 술주정>의 김번수·박번수, 그리고 서사무가 <차사본풀이>의 강림이다. 전자의 인물 형상화는 지나치게 희극적이고 해학적인 데로 치우친 통속성의 극단에 해당하며, 후자의 사례에서는 독립적인 신격의 좌정담에 내재하는 신성성의 극치를 엿볼 수 있다. 이중 이른바 ‘전형적인’ 사령형 인물에 해당하는 것은 가장 많은 인물군이 포착되는 둘째 유형이다. 호기롭고 우악스러우며, 평소의 열악한 처지 때문에 뇌물에 대한 탐심이 크고 그 유혹도 쉽게 이기지 못한다. 또 환대와 뇌물에 태도가 급변하는 다소 변덕스러운 성격을 지니고 있는데, 이는 인간격의 사령일 경우 더욱 두드러지게 나타난다. 한편 신격의 사령은 받은 뇌물에 대한 보상을 확실히 하여주는, 신의 두터운 인물인 경우가 많다.

This paper inquires closely into the aspect of Saryeong(使令) character's imagery in Korean classical works and its typicality. Saryeong who transports a prisoner is an extra but highly individual character seen widely in various Korean classical narration like novel, fable, pansori, shaman song, shaman play, prose-poetry, etc. This character group is composed of the Gunnosaryeong (軍奴使令), the lower servant of the Ministry of Justice and Jeoseungchasa(-差使), the messenger of death. The three types of Saryeong characters can be summarized as follows：first, the type who serves faithfully, second, the type who is shaken with bribe, third, the type who is in two extremes of sacred and profane. The first type in Janghwa Hongnyeon-jeon, Lee Chunpoong-jeon, and Hoesimgok is characterized as violent and cold hearted person transports a prisoner in a hurry. This temperament stems from his position need to obey the order of the superior. And, this type has little personality because his own narration is too short to express his personality. Next, the second type in Pansori Chunhyang-jeon, Fable Seodongji-jeon, Hwaraengi’s shaman song about The Record of a Journey Gunung-nojeonggi, shaman song in epic about the life extension Maenggam-bonpuri·Hwangcheonhonsi ·Jangja-puri, folktale about same theme The Grandfather Saved His Grandchild through Serving the Messenger of Death·Dongbangsak Extended His Life Span through Serving the Messenger of Death, and shaman play about sending on the spirits Sajaesamseong·Saja-gut features a shake-up with bribe and a disloyal. This type can show his tendency because the connection between criminal-detective by money or food makes new scenes. Most of Saryeong characters are included in this second type and they have their own colors by their genres or works. The third type in comedy song Gullosaryeong Suljujeong and shaman song in epic Chasa-bonpuri place the extremes sacred and profane respectively. One is too ridiculous and funny character and the other is deified man with his sacred myth. The most typical Saryeong character among three types is the second has the majority. They have a military spirit and are wild. Because of poor conditions, they get an undue desire for bribe and is easy to fall into temptation of money or food. And, they are capricious, expecially if they are just people not gods. Saryeong characters as gods have faith that offers reword bribes.
