문자, TV, 사이버 매체들이 등장하면서 구술 이야기들의 기능은 상당히 위축된 것처럼 볼 수도 있지만, 다른 한편으로는 그러한 다매체들을 활용한 이야기 문화가 새로이 이루어진 것이라 말할 수도 있다. 그래서 사이버 이야기판에는 글쓰기, 채팅, 사진, 그림(만화), 동영상의 매체들이 역동적으로 뒤섞인다. 이러한 현대사회에서 새로이 부상된 설화의 범주들은 미스테리, 일화, 풍문, 사건비화, 유머 등이다. 그들은 신화, 전설, 민담의 장르 전통을 계승하는 한편으로 그 전통에서 일탈해 있는 것이 특징적이다. 그리고 그들은 이야기의 담론방식이 사실과 경험을 추구하거나, 그렇지 않으면 순전한 허구와 넌센스를 지향하는 양극 현상을 보인다. 이 새로운 설화 양상들이 드러내는 양식성 또는 갈래성은 실화(true stories), 유머(humor), 시리즈 이야기(series stories), 그리고 패러디(parody)에 대한 지향이다. 어떻든 다양하고 새로운 매체의 출현에도 불구하고 구술의 이야기는 사라지지 않을 것이다. 소규모의 공동체들은 여전히 무릎을 맞대고 ‘이야기의 꽃’을 피울 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 추후로 구술의 이야기는 언더그라운드, 비하인드, 안티의 담론을 형성하는 데 더욱더 중요한 구실을 하게 될 것이라 전망된다.

Since various media for communication, as like books, TV, and internet etc., has appeared, orality of folktales considerably seems to be weakened. But it says that new storytelling culture came into being in contemporary times. So all kinds of communication, that is writings, chatting, photographs, animations, and moving images, are mixing dynamically in mass media or cyber space. Today, mystery, humorous stories, rumor, behind the scenes stories, and the like, became more important cathegories of folktales than traditional folktale genres. On the one hand, they succeed traditions of the folktale genres, on the other hand, they totally depart from them. And I take notice of, more or less, contradictory phases in the world view of contemporary folktales. In short, It takes a serious view of facts and experiences in some cases, runs after pure fiction and nonsense in other cases. And also their style of discourse prefers true stories, series stories, and parody. Except for that, we shall wait until these pursuits on new genres in stories have been embodied. Though appearance of new media, oral tales would be also alive in future. I think they have more serious roles in making and occasionally promoting the underground discourses against pressure on public opinion or struggle discourses in undemocratic situations.
