현대신화를 살피는 일은 고대와 중세, 근대를 거쳐 신화가 걸어온 길을 탐색하는 과정이다. 신화의 변하지 않는 원리와 변하는 원리에 대하여 검토해야 현대신화의 특성이 이전의 신화와 견주어 선명하게 부각될 수 있다. 고대와 근대의 신화는 중세를 건너뛰어 연계되고 현대의 신화는 근대를 건너뛰어 중세와 친연성을 갖는다고 생각할 수 있다. 근대의 신화 인식이 고대 신화적 속성 가운데 하나를 견인했다면, 현대의 신화 인식은 중세 신화적 속성 가운데 하나를 가져왔다고 견주어 말할 수 있다. 고대의 자민족 중심주의를 구현하던 고대신화가 근대의 신민족주의와 민족국가의 이념을 구현하는 데에 소용되었고, 고대신화의 인물은 개개인의 典範의 역할을 담당하지 아니하고 한 집단의 영웅으로서 기능할 따름이었다고 이해하면 그렇다. 고대의 신화적 영웅이나 신은 전승집단 구성원들에게 있어 모방 가능한 대상이 아니었다. 그 대상의 혈통을 이어받은 후손임을 자랑스럽게 인식하는 것이 무엇보다 중요했다. 신화를 전승하는 집단 구성원 개개인이 그 대상과 자신을 一體化하여 심리적으로 그 행적과 인식에 도달할 수 있다고 여기지도 않았다. 결국 전승집단 구성원들에게 있어 대상으로서의 신화적 인물일 따름이다. 중세의 보편윤리를 구현하면서 초월적 과업을 성취한 신화의 인물이 개개인의 典範(Model)이 되어 그 인물의 행적과 인식이 전승집단 구성원 개개인의 삶의 지침이 되는 양상이 중세의 신화에서 감지된다. 나아가 신화적 인물을 구성원 개개인이 동일시하여 보편윤리를 구현하는 행적을 누구라도 뒤따를 수 있어 개개인의 삶 속에서 보편윤리를 구현하는 것이 가능한 신화 전승의 양상이 중세적 특징 가운데 하나일 것으로 생각한다. 현대의 신화에 존재하는 것으로 인정될 수 있는 영웅은 특별한 분야에서 대단한 과업을 이루어 추종자들로 하여금 종교적 심성과 열광적 숭배를 이끌어 낸다. 그를 따르는 이들은 그를 영웅시하고 그의 행적과 삶의 태도, 외모, 의상마저도 모방하고 답습한다. 그래서 형성된 집단의 구성원들은 그 대상(영웅)을 통해 자신이 이룩하지 실현하지 못한 혹은 하지 못하는 욕망을 대상과 더불어 실현한다. 그런 점에서 현대신화는 중세신화의 속성 가운데 하나를 이어받고 있다. 그 욕망은 명예이기도 하고 막대한 이윤 창출이기도 하고, 새로운 가치(음악, 이미지 등)이기도 할 것이다.

Approaching to modern myth is like searching a path in which antique, medieval and modern myth have gone through. We must firstly distinguish the unchanging mythical principals and the dynamic mythical principals to make present time myths apparent compared to premodern time's myths. Antique myths and modern myths are connected without a bridge of medieval myth, meanwhile medieval myths are closely connected to present time myths without modern myths. If recognition about myths in modern times tagged a property of antique myths, we can say that recognition about myths in present times tagged a property of medieval myths. Antique myths which realized self centerdness of their own population were used to show idealism of Neo-Nationalism and Nation State, Protagonists from antique myths were used not for representing individual model roll but for representing group hero. Mythical hero or god of ancient times were not a mimic object. Being a decedent of a honored people was most important. Individuals of a group who are transmitting myths were not believed that they could arrive to recognition or action of a mythical god by psychological unification. After all, for individuals are just abject of a mythical protagonists. From medieval myths aspects were observed that by realizing medieval universal ethics, mythical protagonists who performed extraordinary works became a roll model of every individuals for their life. Moreover one more medieval mythical characteristic is that every individual could assimilate medieval mythical protagonists and from that people can follow their roll model realizing universal ethics. Heros of present time myths are the one who accomplished a extraordinary work and make their own followers to have religious passion and worship. Followers believe them as a hero and imitate their life, appearance and even their fashion. So they could have a alternative satisfactions by imitating their heros. From this point of view present time myths share a characteristics of a medieval myths. That desire could be a honor, a cash cow, new value (music, image) etc.
