구비문학과 음악은 말이라는 기본 자질을 공유한다. 그래서 구비문학과 음악은 깊은 관련성을 갖는다. 기저 자질이 일치하나 이러한 기저 자질의 실현 양상은 구비문학의 갈래에 따라서 전혀 다르게 나타난다. 구비문학과 음악은 공동체의 상정 여하에 따라서 다양하게 구성되는 특징이 있음이 증명되었다. 소리가 다양하나 민요의 경우에는 공동체 전체가 문제되며, 언어적 기저 자질을 공유하는 것에 따라서 공동체가 상정된다. 동요의 경우에 언어적 분절과 율격적 분절, 음악적 분절이 결합되며, 특히 지역적 차이를 형성하고 있는 음악적 분절이 자의적으로 결합되고 이를 근간으로 해서 지역공동체의 차이를 해명할 수 없다고 본다. 그러나 무가의 경우에는 선명하게 지역적 차이를 해명할 수 있다. 민요와 다르게 무가는 전문적인 사제자 집단이 공동체로 작용하기 때문에 이러한 차이가 부각된다. 동일한 구비문학인 데도 공동체가 어느 집단이 되고 어떠한 갈래인가의 여하에 따라서 차별성을 증명할 수 있으리라고 본다.
