이 글은 전통시대부터 이어온 다양한 민요공동체 활동을 검토하고 근대시기에 성립된 민요공동체들의 존재 양상을 검토하여 근대민요공동체의 성격을 규명한 글이다. 연구 결과 근대민요공동체는 주체의 면에서, 이념의 면에서, 공간확장의 면에서 전통시대와는 확연히 다른 모습을 담고 있다. 특히 주제면에서 신분과 억압으로 부터의 인간해방, 경제와 권력으로부터의 평등의식 실현은 인류가 추구하는 보편적 가치인 바 근대민요사회는 전통민요사회가 속으로만 담아왔던 인류의 보편적 가치를 밖으로 드러내고 이를 실천하여 인간 중심의 사회, 평등한 사회를 실현하는데 주도적 역할을 수행했다. 그런 점에서 볼 때 민요공동체는 다른 어떤 분야보다도 앞서 시대를 견인하는 힘을 발휘한 공동체로 평가되며, 이는 민속문화가 담고있는 오래된 미래의 문화적 속성을 그대로 보여주는 사례로 평가되며, 이를 통해 민속문화가 우리의 미래문화를 견인하는 주요 인자가 됨을 재인식시켜 준다.

This study is focused on the activities of various “folk song communities” inherited from the past, and on some aspects and characteristics of folk song communities formed in modern times. Research on the subject shows that modern folk song communities exhibit clear differences from those of the past in terms of subject matter, ideology and spatial expansion. As for subjectmatter, modern folk song communities played a leading role in revealing the universal values of mankind, such as the liberation of mankind from the shackles of suppression and the status system, as well as the realizationof equality in terms of economy and politics, that had been suppressed in past folk song communities. They also played a key role in the efforts to create a human-centered, equal society. Therefore, folk song communities are regarded as pioneers that moved the age forward before all others. They have been able to display cultural properties of the future that had been contained in traditional folk culture, helping recognize folk culture as a main force in drawing the culture of our future.
