이 글은 19세기 말～20세기 초 야담의 전개 양상을 고찰하기 위한 목적에서 쓰여졌다. 야담은 17세기 중·후반 이후 필기와 패설의 전통을 이으면서 등장하였는데, 19세기말로 접어들면서 야담은 새로운 모습으로 변모를 꾀한다. 변모의 방향은 크게 세 경로로 요약된다. 첫째, 역사로의 경사. 둘째, 야담의 독자성 확보. 셋째, 소설로의 경사가 그것이다. 또한 표기문자도 순전한 한문에서 한문현토나 국문 표기의 양상도 나온다. 이러한 움직임은 야담이 자기갱신을 하면서 발전하는 한 양상이었다고 볼 수 있다. 1894～1910년의 야담은 두 방향으로 전개된다. 그 방향의 하나는 교화와 계몽에 있고, 다른 하나는 오락에 있다. 두 방향 모두 당시 신문 등을 비롯한 언론매체를 통해 이러한 양상을 읽어낼 수 있다. 이는 또한 야담이 파적을 위한 개인적인 목적에서 벗어나 비특정 독자를 대상으로 변모되었음을 알 수 있다. 1910～1920년대의 야담은 구활자본으로 출간되어 향유된다. 이 때 나온 야담은 19세기에 편찬된 야담과 큰 차이가 없다. 다만 부분적으로 사실성을 강조하고 있다는 점에서 일정한 차이를 보인다. 그렇지만 전대에 보여주었던 계몽을 위한 특성은 현저하게 약화된다. 1920년대 후반, 야담은 민중계몽운동의 일환으로 활용된다. 그 양상은 야담운동을 통해 구체화된다. 이는 야담을 통한 민족 공동체를 꾀한 한 양상으로, 문학이 시대에 어떻게 대처하였는가를 잘 보여준다. 그렇지만 야담운동은 일제의 탄압에 의해 결국 붕괴되고, 그 자리는 통속적인 형태의 야담이 자리를 차지하게 된다.

The thesis aims to study on the phase of Yadam from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. There was a new attempt of change in Yadam heading toward the late 19th century. The directions of change were the inclination to the history, the obtain of Yadam's own identity and the inclination to the novel. And also, the letters of writing changed from the pure Chinese characters to the Korean or mingling Hangeul with Chinese characters. This changes were the innovation of Yadam in the late 19th century. We pointed out characteristics of Yadam from 1894 to 1910. First was the enlightenment and second was the amusement. Yadam was published not by writing but printing in this period. This meant that Yadam was no more a singular and specific person's pastime but it became readings of a great number of people. The Yadam from 1910 to 1920 characterized by the emphasis of realism in part. The late 1920's, Yadam was used by the method of enlightenment movement. This movement actualized by the Yadam movement. But Yadam movement ended in failure because of the suppression of Japanese imperialism. And just yellow－covered Yadam left.
