이 글은 1900년대 전반기를 대상으로 삼아 방랑이야기꾼의 유형을 정리하고 이야기 전승문화의 일단을 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 반백년간의 시기를 일거에 횡단하여 방랑이야기꾼을 다룬다는 것은 이야기꾼 연구에서 이제까지 시도되지 못했던 일로서 매우 의미있는 주제이자 또한 중요한 과제라고 할 수 있다. 이 무렵은 한국 근현대사의 접점을 이루고 있어 역사의 조류가 다변했고 흐름도 빨랐던 시기였다. 따라서 위 주제는 이야기꾼의 양상과 동태를 시대적 상황과 연결지어 이해하고 그로써 이야기꾼의 유형과 시대·사회적 성격 등의 문제에 대한 이해의 폭과 깊이를 좀더 넓히는 데에 기여해줄 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 그러나 이 시대에 활동했던 인물들의 출생 기점이 거의 1990년대 이전이며, 혹은 늦어야 1900년대 초반에 해당한다. 때문에 생존인물을 직접 만나기가 어려우며, 대부분 한 두 세대 뒤의 목격자들이 당사자를 목격한 기억에 의존하여 이야기꾼으로서의 모습을 파악해야 하므로 대상인물을 두루 찾아내고 구체적인 인물의 실상을 파악하는 일이 쉽지 않다는 난점이 있다. 필자는 우선 방랑이야기꾼의 특성문제부터 간단히 정립하고자 했다. 그리고 이야기꾼과 시대와의 관련성을 중시하여 이야기꾼을 파생시킨 해당 시기의 중요한 역사적 사건을 정리함으로써 역사와 이야기꾼이 깊은 관련을 맺고 있으며, 이야기꾼 개인에 대한 깊은 이해에 이러한 측면이 고려될 필요가 있음을 드러내 보이고자 했다. 더 나아가. 이러한 표면적 측면 외에 역사의 일반적인 흐름 속에서 지속되고 있는 다양한 유형의 이야기꾼을 파악하여 정리하고자 했다. 그리고 끝으로 이들 방랑 이야기꾼들의 활동을 통한 이야기 문화와 공동체적 성격의 일단을 파악해보고자 했다.

This paper is to examine the types of wandering storytellers and culture of storytelling in the early 20th century in Korea. There have been previous researches about storytellers but not with a focus on a specific time. By focusing on a specific time, the dynamic relationships and trends between times and storytellers can be better understood. It can also help in finding various types of storytellers. In addition, this approach can help to extend the concept of storytellers who are people of active self－realization rather than with merely brilliant talents. In Korean history, the early 20th century was in turmoil. Turbulent situation of the times made peoples' lives unstable. Historic incidents made an influence on wandering storytellers of the times. The main incidents of the times are i) Farmers' Revolution in 1894, ii) Righteous Army Movement, iii) compulsory draft forced by the Japanese, iv) Independence Movement, and v) Yeosu－Suncheon Revolt. There were a lot of storytellers who were closely related with specific quality of the times. Meanwhile, the type of wandering storytellers as a general social phenomenon existed as well. The former was can be called specific type while the latter can be referred to as the general type. The general type is strong in generality and does not change a lot. The general types are as follows : i) believers in ten good places for refugee, ii) ruined yangban (upper－class people), iii) poor scholars iv) fengshui(風水) believers, v) fortune tellers, vi) writing brush sellers, vii) servants, viii) bums, viiii) religious people, x) beggars, and xi) professional storytellers.
