Myths as a reflection of human behavior influence customs. It has the normatively absolute power that gives dignity and significance to some society, said Malinowski. Likewise, Jeju's myth has been standard of life to inhabitants of Jeju island. But in modernized societies, myths do not play an important role and gradually disappears as rituals have faded away with the change of social atmosphere. In this paper, such ritual changes in Jeju are examined through the cases of its agriculture and fishery.
The existence of myth is handed down by its believers. Along with the change and development of agricultural patterns, however, the rituals has disappeared. Rituals relate to productivity and richness through the behaviors of human beings. The disappearance of ritual processes made myth left by itself. Myth is composed of love stories of man and woman, and goes through modification by accepting the taste of modernization. A typical example of such is Seykyegn Play.
Fishery will survive as long as sea exists. There exists the Youngdong rite related to the story of sea in Jeju. But the increase of income of islanders leads the numbers of woman divers, Haenye, to decrease by avoiding hard work like fishing. So ship's officers also participated in Youngdong rite. In addition, as the rite is designated “intangible treasure”, the shamanism masters transformed its original rituals on their own will. Chilmeri-dang rite is such an example.
A god who protects the village is known as Tang God (one of the shamanist gods). Seyhwa Tang God is a female god, and Pyengdae Tang God is a male god. The myth explains that the conflict made female and male gods separate each other as a result of which the followers of each are also led into the stage of confrontation. However, the ways of life have changed. The change of customs in intra-village marriage results to that of customs in inter-village marriage so that myth was transformed as well.
Based on these examples, it is argued that the myths of Jeju are in the processes of a gradual disappearance or transformation into literarization.
