귀신의 존재유무는 불확실하다. 사람들의 인식에 따라 귀신의 존재와 성격이 결정된다. 귀신설화는 귀신의 존재유무는 물론 귀신의 정체에 관한 사람들의 인식을 잘 반영하고 있다. 따라서 귀신설화에 나타난 귀신과 사람의 만남 양상을 통해 귀신인식을 밝히는 것이 이 연구의 목적이다. 사람과 귀신이 만남 양상이 5가지로 분석된다. 1) 귀신의 우위에 의해 사람이 귀신에게 홀리는 관계 (귀신 > 사람) 2) 사람이 우위에서 귀신을 제압하거나 퇴치하는 관계 (귀신 < 사람) 3) 귀신이 일방적으로 사람에게 도움을 주는 관계 (귀신 ⇒ 사람) 4) 귀신과 사람이 서로 도움을 주고받는 관계 (귀신 ⇔ 사람) 5) 사람이 귀신을 홀대한 탓에 벌을 받는 관계 (귀신 → 사람) 사람과 귀신의 만남에 따라 사람이 귀신을 인식하는 태도가 드러나는가 하면, 이야기하는 사람의 귀신인식도 드러난다. 설화에 나타난 귀신의 존재에 관한 인식은 크게 네 가지로 분석된다. 가) 귀신을 부정하되 공포심 때문에 납득할 수 없는 상황을 귀신행위로 착각 나) 귀신에 대한 확신 때문에 납득할 수 없는 상황을 귀신의 조화로 추론 다) 귀신을 부정하는 까닭에 귀신으로 착각한 사물을 근거로 귀신을 부정 라) 선험적 지식과 고정관념에 따라 불가사의한 현실을 귀신의 조화로 인식 귀신의 존재를 믿는 여부에 따라 귀신의 존재를 인식하는 상황이 네 갈래로 나타난다. 첫째 귀신에 대한 확신이 귀신의 조화로 인식되는 경우, 둘째 귀신에 대한 선험적 지식이 귀신의 존재로 인식되는 경우, 셋째 귀신을 강하게 불신하되 공포심 때문에 자기도 모르게 귀신의 조화로 인식하는 경우, 넷째 귀신을 불신하는 까닭에 불충분한 근거로 귀신을 없는 것으로 인식하는 경우가 있다. 귀신의 존재를 인정하는 경향이 높다. 귀신설화는 귀신과 인간의 만남 양상과 영향 관계를 통하여 끊임없이 인간이 귀신과 바람직한 관계를 맺는 문법을 일깨워주려고 한다. 사람이 귀신에게 휘둘려서 홀리는 일이나 귀신을 맹목적으로 섬기는 일은 인간의 한계로서 비판적으로 인식되는 반면에, 사람이나 주검, 귀신을 홀대하지 않고 좋은 관계를 맺으면 뒤에 귀신이 되어 도움을 준다는 호혜적 귀신인식을 적극적으로 보여준다. 사람과 귀신의 세계는 차원이 다르지만 서로 오고갈 수 있고 또 영향을 주고받는 인과론적 관계 속에 놓여 있다고 여긴다.

Existence of ghosts is not certain. The existence of ghosts and its’ character are defined by how human beings perceive ghosts. Ghost stories reflect the existence of ghosts as well as man’s perception toward these supernatural spirits. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to clarify the perception of the existence of ghosts by investigating encounters of human and ghosts that appear in ghost stories. There are 5 different analyses to the human-ghost encounter. 1) Dominance by ghost with ghost possessing the human being (ghost > human) 2) Dominance by human with human controlling or eliminating the ghost (ghost < human) 3) Ghost gives help to human (ghost ⇒ human) 4) Ghost and human help each other (ghost ⇔ human) 5) Human punished by ghost due to neglective actions toward ghost (ghost → human) The encounter of human and ghost displays the perception of humans toward ghosts and also shows the perception of the story teller. Perception of ghost existence portrayed in stories can be analyzed in 4 different ways. A) Has no belief in ghosts but confuses unexplainable situations with ghosts due to fear. B)Has strong belief in ghosts and therefore concludes unexplainable situations as the doings of supernatural spirits. C) Has no belief in ghosts and thus denies its’ existence by basing their belief on situations of having confused objects as ghosts. D) Perceives mysterious reality as harmony of ghosts based on transcendental knowledge and stereotypes. Belief in the existence of ghosts categorizes into 4 different situations of ghost perception. First, having firm belief of ghosts which leads to the perception of harmony of ghosts, second, having transcendental knowledge of ghosts leading to the perception of ghosts’ existence, third, having strong denial of ghosts but unconsciously perceiving harmony of ghosts due to fear, and fourth, perceiving ghosts to be non-existent with insufficient bases because of strong disbelief in ghosts. There is a high tendency of accepting the existence of ghosts. By portraying human-ghost encounters and its’ effects, ghost stories try to enlighten the method of constructing ideal relations between human and ghosts. Possession of humans by ghosts and recklessly believing in ghosts is a limitation of human faculty and is perceived critically, while the reciprocal perception of ghosts, which is shown when good relations are constructed when a person, body, or ghost hasn’t been neglected, is positively displayed. It is assumed that human and ghosts exist in different dimensions but can move back and forth, and that they have causational relationships with mutual effects toward each other.
