농업 사회에서 산업 사회로 변화하는 동안 현대 사회의 구비문학은 많은 공격을 받고 있다. 연구자에 따라 위기를 감지하는 정도의 차이는 있겠으나 구비문학 연구자로서 이러한 고민으로부터 완전히 자유로울 수는 없을 것이다. 현대 사회가 전통적인 문화의 공동성과 집단성을 해체하는 사이에 현대의 다양한 매체와 상업 문화 등의 요소들은 구비적 특성들을 해체시켰다. 현대 사회에서 구비문학의 쇠퇴 징후들은 다양하게 드러난다. 즉, 구비문학의 창조·수용·전승에 있어서 국지화 경향과 생동성을 상실하여 박제화 되는 경향을 보이며, 구비문학의 변종을 초래함으로써 이질화 경향을 보이고, 웃음을 유발하는 꽁트화 경향, 공연 중심으로 변해가는 흥행화 경향이 그것이다. 이러한 구비문학의 위기를 극복하기 위해서 우리는 새로운 길을 모색해야 한다. 즉, 현대에 적절하게 구비문학의 개념을 확대할 필요가 있으며, 현대의 많은 자료들을 수용하여 구비문학의 연구 자료를 확장시켜야 하고, 새로운 자료 분석을 위한 연구 시각의 전환이 요청되며, 이에 따른 새로운 연구 방법을 개발해야 한다. 이를 통해 현대 사회의 구비문학은 새로운 지평을 열게 될 것이다.

During the transitional period rural society moved into industrial society. Oral literature in modern society is under attack. Few would disagree, although different voices would identify different crises. While modern society destroyed the communal elements of culture, its concomitant effects destroyed its oral character. There are many symptoms of decline in oral literature: The number of people enjoying performance of oral literature is reduced rapidly, the performance of oral literature has lost vitality, many irregular works of oral literature have produced, the materials of laughter are treated as important one, commercial performances come into vogue. The above examples illustrate how modern society has vigorously engaged in the change of oral literature. In order to be meaningful studies the research of oral literature has to explore new ground: To broaden the concept of oral literature, to deal with materials beyond the limits, to move to the new view-point, to develop new method for research oral literature.
