최근의 설화 연구를 보면 양적인 면에서는 뚜렷한 성장을 보이고 있지만 질적인 면에서는 뚜렷한 비약을 이루었다고 보기 어려운 것이 사실이다. 지금까지의 설화 연구에서 질적인 전환을 꾀했던 주요한 업적들을 살펴보면 하나같이 당대 현실이 요구하는 뚜렷한 문제의식에 기반하여 연구가 이루어졌음을 볼 때, 현단계 설화 연구의 좌표를 점검하는 작업은 현재의 학문 내적 현실과 학문 외적 현실이 요구하는 새로운 문제의식에 초점을 맞추어 진행되어야 한다. 테크놀러지의 발달에 힘입은 디지털 글쓰기가 보편화되면서 생활인이 문학의 주체가 되고 생활경험이 문학적 형상화의 직접적인 원천이 되는 현실을 감안할때, 설화문학에 대한 생활문학적 관점이 요구된다고 할 수 있다. 문학은 생활이어야 한다는 문제의식에 기반해서 설화 연구에 대한 새로운 분석틀을 제시해야 한다는 것이다. 이에 본고에서는 설화의 생활문학적 특성의 하나로 ‘놀이성’을 제시하였다. 서사적인 정보를 놀이화하는 일종의 인포테인먼트(Infortainment), 즉 서사-놀이로 설화를 바라볼 때, 설화 연구는 놀이의 요소들인 반복, 긴장, 안정, 전환, 대조, 변주, 결합과 해체, 해결 등에 대해서 좀더 많은 관심을 기울일 필요가 있다. 특히 이러한 술어들이 거의 다 미적 효과를 기술하기 위해서 쓰이는 미학 개념들이라는 점은 연구의 가능성에 대해서 시사하는 바가 크다고 하겠다.

The fact is that though a quantitative growth is great, it is difficult to accept that a distinct qualitative growth has really achieved, at recent studies on folktales. If you take a good look at the main studies that accomplished a drastic switch at studies on folktales, you know that these studies have a distinct critical mind on a realistic basis at that time. Therefore to check up the coordinates of studies on folktales at the present stage must be focused on the new critical mind to be demanded around and in the studies at this time. Thanks to technology, digital writing is general, the public is the subject of literature and experiences of life is the direct source of literature. For that reason, studies on folktales is in need of living-literature's angle. The critical mind that literature must be living can present the new frame of analysis. This study watches 'playfulness' as a living-literature's features. If we look at folktales as a infortainment or narrative-play, we must pay our energies on many concepts at studies on folktales, for instance, repetition, tension, stability, conversion, contrast, variation, organization, disorganization, settlement and so forth. Especially if we consider that these concepts are used to describe aesthetic effects, we can get many ideas for studies on folktales.
