이 논문은 ‘현 단계 구비문학 연구의 좌표’라는 기획주제 중 하나로, 이제까지의 신화와 서사시 연구의 성과를 반성하고 전망한 것이다. 필자는 이것을 ‘연구자’의 문제에서 검토하였다. 환경이 바뀌었다고 해서 연구대상만 넓히면 문제가 해결되는 것은 아니기 때문이다. 신화의 경우 문헌신화를 중심으로 한 민족적 연구, 구전신화에 대한 인류학적·민속학적·문학적 연구, 비교신화의 연구 등으로 연구자의 관심이 바뀌어 왔다. 서사시의 경우 국내의 것에 집중하던 연구에서 최근에는 주변 민족의 것과 비교 연구하려는 경향이 증대하고 있다. 신화나 서사시 모두 비교연구가 급속하게 진전되고 있음을 본다. 그러나 21세기의 환경에서 신화, 서사시 연구자는 연구자세를 바꿔야할 필요성이 있다. 즉 신화의 경우 비교연구의 지속성과 깊이 있는 연구를 통한 신화론의 창출, 인접학문과의 연관성 속에서 신화 연구하기, 신화 풀어쓰기 및 다양한 활용의 모색, 현대 신화의 범주 설정과 탐구 및 대중문화의 신화적 분석 등에, 서사시의 경우 기존 연구의 심화를 통한 이론정립 및 동영상 작업의 강구, 비교연구의 진행, 판소리 창작의 필요성 및 창작이론의 제시 등에 전향적 자세를 보여야 한다. 이런 것들을 충분히 소화하자면 이제 신화, 서사시 연구자는 문학연구자로서 뿐만 아니라 문화연구자를 겸하는 자리에 서야 할 것이다.

As one of the planned themes in “The Current State of Oral Literature Research”, this paper reflects on the results of research on myths and epics up until now and takes a look at the prospects for this research. The author examined this as an issue of the “researcher”. This is because simply broadening the subject of research as the environment changes does not solve the problem. In the case of myths, researchers' interest has gone from national research centered on recorded myths, to anthropological, folklore and literary research of oral myths, to comparative mythology. In the case of epics, there has been a recent tendency to augment research focused on domestic epics with comparative research with the myths of neighboring peoples. It appears that comparative research in both myths and epics is developing rapidly. However, in the environment of the 21st century, myth and epic researchers need to change their attitude toward their research. That is, in the case of myths, there must be a change in research attitudes to include the creation of a theory of myths through continuous and in-depth comparative research, research on myths within a relationship with neighboring academic fields, the search for a variety of ways to apply myths, such as presenting them so they are easily digested by the general public, and the establishment of and research on a category of modern myths, and the mythological analysis of mass culture. In the case of epics, this attitude should include the establishment of theories through a deepening of existing research and deliberation on video projects, comparative research, and bringing up the need for Pansori creation and creation theories. In order to successfully accomplish these things, myth and epic researchers must not only be literary researchers but also cultural researchers as well.
