본 논문은 ‘구비문학과 사회적 소통: 관점과 전망’이라는 기획주제의 하나로 발표된 것이다. 이와 관련하여 학회에서 특히 ‘다문화 사회에서의 소통과 구비문학의 활용’에 초점을 맞춰 이 연구 주제의 학문적 전망과 실천적 과제를 제시해줄 것을 요청하였다. 이에 본 논문은 본 연구자 및 동료 연구자들이 장차 수행해야 할 구체적 논의의 총체적 틀을 제시한다는 관점, 이를테면 총론적 관점에서 이 연구 주제를 논의하였다. 따라서 구체적이고도 세부적인 논의보다는 구비문학이 다문화 사회에서의 소통 도구로써 어떻게 활용될 수 있는가에 초점을 맞춰 논의하였다. 그런데 이런 연구 주제가 체계적이면서도 효율적인 실천 방안이 되기 위해서는 한국에서의 다문화 또는 한국적 다문화사회의 실상을 먼저 정확하게 인식할 필요가 있다. 첫째, 한국은 아직 본격적 다문화사회에 진입하지는 않았다는 점이다. 이것은 다문화사회에서의 소통을 특정 문화 집단에 두어야 할 것인가, 개인에 두어야 할 것인가의 문제를 제기한다. 둘째, 탈북이주민까지를 한국적 다문화사회의 논의에서 논해야 한다는 점이다. 탈북이주민은 법적으로 대한민국 국민이지만, 정치 경제 사회 문화적으로 보자면 다문화사회의 구성원에 가깝다는 점을 고려해야 한다. 셋째, 성숙한 다문화사회를 맞이하기 위한 체계적, 평등적 교육을 마련해야 한다는 점이다. 그간 한국에서 다문화교육이 지속적으로 강조되고 수행되어 온 것처럼 보이지만, 실제로는 다문화중점학교 위주로 이루어졌을 뿐이다. 정규 교육의 체계 속에 다문화교육이 자리 잡아야, 다문화교육이 핵심적으로 지향하는 교육, 즉 평등성 교육이 수행될 수 있을 것이다. 또한 다문화사회에서 다문화적 소통이 진정한 효과를 거두기 위해서는 이주자와 정주자뿐만 아니라 정주자와 정주자 간에도 소통이 이뤄져야 하며, 다문화적 소통이 원활하게 수행되기 위한 조건으로써 문화적 지식, 기능, 태도, 가치 등 네 가지를 교육할 필요가 있다. 그런데 구비문학은 이런 점들을 충족시키기 위한 좋은 형식과 내용들을 갖추고 있다. 그러므로 구비문학이 다문화사회에서의 다문화적 소통에 활용되기기 위해서는 1) 다문화적 소통을 위한 외국의 구비문학 소개 작업, 2) 의사소통행위 이론과 구비문학 연구의 접목, 3) 구비문학을 매개로 한 ‘다문화적 소통과 교육’의 연계 방안 모색 등을 앞으로의 과제로 삼아야 할 것이다.

This paper was published under one of the planning themes of the 'Literature and Social Communication: Perspectives and Prospects' conference. The conference asked for suggestions and perspectives for specific discussions. Therefore, I have discussed multicultural communication from a holistic point of view, but have not discussed it in detail. First, I mentioned the multicultural society in Korea. It is necessary to note that Korea has not yet become a fully-fledged multicultural society, and that North Korean defectors should be subjects of the discussion on a Korean multicultural society. In the following, I explained that communication in multicultural society should take place not only between immigrants and permanent residents but also between permanent residents and permanent residents. Finally, I examined whether the oral literature is compatible with 'communication in a multicultural society' or 'multicultural communication.' In this regard, four criteria―cultural knowledge, function, attitude, and value―are suggested as conditions for smooth multicultural communication. Also I saw that the oral literature did fit well. In order for this to have a meaningful effect, it is necessary to―1) introduce oral literature for multicultural communication, 2) Integrate communication theory and the study of oral literature, and 3) link multicultural communication and education through mediated oral literature.
