이 글에서는 서사민요 <진주낭군>이 어떻게 형성, 전승되어 현재에 이르렀는지, 현전하는 <진주낭군>과 그 친족관계 노래들을 대상으로 형성과 전승에 관련된 다양한 맥락을 고찰하였다. <진주낭군>은 고려 속악가사 <월정화>의 서사 문맥과 유사한 서사구조를 지니고 있어 고려시대 이전부터 형성, 전승돼 온 노래로 짐작된다. 특히 현재 전승되고 있는 다양한 계열의 <서답(빨래)노래>를 바탕으로 추정해볼 때, 고려 시대에는 현전하는 중년소리 <진주낭군>보다 더 오랜 옛날소리인 <서답노래1(아내 모른체한 남편)>과 <서답노래2(상사병으로 죽은 총각)> 계열의 노래가 전승되다가 진주의 위제만 사건이 일어난 이후로, <서답노래1>에 ‘진주’, ‘진주남강’ 등의 고유명사가 붙으며 옛날소리 <진주낭군>이 형성된 것이 아닐까 한다. <진주낭군>은 이후 <시집살이노래>와 복합되면서 더욱 활발하게 확산되었고, 근대 이후에는 <청춘가>, <노랫가락> <창부타령> 등이 유행하면서 그 가락에 얹어 부르며 중년소리 <진주낭군>의 전형적 사설과 곡조로 변이되었다. 뿐만 아니라 1970-80년대에는 민중가요 <진주난봉가>로 수용되는 등 다양한 전승의 노정을 밟아왔다. <진주낭군>은 이렇게 오랜 세월에 걸친 다양한 전승 과정을 통해 기층에서부터 상층까지, 젊은 층에서부터 노년층에게까지, 지방에서부터 중앙까지 두루 사랑받는 노래가 될 수 있었다. 게다가 나라의 동남부 구석에 위치하고 있는 진주 지역에서 형성돼 전국으로 널리 퍼져나가 광포유형으로 불리며 ‘중년소리’로 변개되는 한편, 다른 한 편에서는 여전히 옛날소리의 모습을 지속적으로 보전하고 유지해 왔다는 점에서, <진주낭군>의 가치와 의의는 새롭게 주목할 필요가 있다.

The purpose of this essay is to examine the various contexts related to the formation and tradition of the narrative folk song "Jinju Nanggun". The song "Jinju Nanggun" has a narrative structure similar to the narrative context of the Goryeo folk song "Woljeonghwa", and is thought to be a song that was formed in the Goryeo period and handed down. It is believed that "Seodabnorae" is the oldest sound of the narrative song "Jinju Nanggun". Since the Wijeman incident happened in Jinju district, it may have been the motive for the formation of "Jinju Nanggun". "Jinju Nanggun" became more well-known after it was compounded with "Sijibsalinorae", and after the modern era, it became popular and changed into typical tunes with middle-aged sounds called "Cheongchunga", "Noraegarak", and "Changbu Taryeong". In the 1980s, it was accepted as the folk song "Jinju Nanbongga". Through these various traditions over the years, "Jinju Nanggun" has become a popular song from the lower to the upper class, from the younger generation to the old, from the local to the central. In addition, it was formed in the Jinju area, which is located in the corner of the country's southeast, and spread widely throughout the country. Hence it could change from the regional type to the widespread type. On the one hand, it has transformed not only into various middle-aged sounds, but on the other hand has preserved the old sounds. Indeed, the value and significance of "Jinju Nanggun", the song of Jinju district and of the whole country, need to be given their due attention.
