Gerard Genette takes Marcel Proust's novel, In Search of Lost Time not only as an instrument but also as a foundation on which he built and developed his narrative discourse. In particular, Genette analyzes what he calls the “Proustian Metonymy” to which he attributes a particular meaning, which distinguishes it from the metonymy of general rhetoric. According to Genette, Proustian metonymy has two distinguished characteristics. First, when the narrator says that it is about the metaphor, in reality it is the metonymy that is “slipped”, “metamorphosed” or “masked”. Second, the metaphor can take place at first, but it is the metonymy that maintains it and gives it a new form of life by enriching it. In the case where metonymy takes place, there must be a spatial contiguity or temporal concomitance. In this study, we would like to try if Genette's theory of Proustian metonymy can be applied in the episode of the trip to Venice that takes place in The Fugitive. We will see that the cathedral of St. Mark, by its proximity to the sea and the canals is described as the final route of the water. In addition, the landscapes and some people seen in Venice are described not in their own essence, but through the model elements that appear in the paintings seen in the museums in Venice. What is even more striking is the fact that the narrator transposes his past relationship with Albertine on the one he is trying to establish with the women met in Venice. In doing so, he only prolongs and repeats a relationship that is destined for failure. Thus the portrait of Venice is produced not on the metaphor based on analogy, but on metonymy, which is based on a contagion made possible by a horizontal relation. In trying to apply the Proustian metonymy analyzed by Genette on the episode of Venice, we could again see the validity of Genette's theory.
