세기말 오스트리아 작가인 아르투어 슈니츨러의 내적독백 소설 『엘제 양』은 인간관계를 형성해가는 본질적 요소로 ‘시선’의 문제를 다룬다. 특히 남성중심사회에서의 남성과 여성의 관계에서 시선의 문제는 양성의 권력구도에 민감하게 작용하는 메커니즘이기도 하다. 남성은 여성에게 주체적으로 시선을 던짐으로 여성에 대한 자신의 욕망을 표현하면서 이미 여성의 신체에 침투하고 있다. 반면, 남성의 시선의 대상이 되는 여성은 수치심을 느끼는 동시에 남성의 시선을 사로잡는 아름다움을 드러낼 때 가장 가치 있는 존재가 된다고 인식한다. 미모의 주인공 엘제는 내적으로는 시선의 주체가 되고 싶어 하는 욕망을 갖지만, 사회적으로는 남성의 시선의 대상이 되는 여성의 의식을 내면화하고 있다. 엘제는 아버지의 빚을 갚기 위해 아버지 친구인 화상 도르스데이에게 나체를 보여주어야 하는 거래를 한다. 엘제는 도르스데이를 위시한 많은 사람들 앞에서 나체를 드러냄으로 도르스데이와의 거래조건을 충족시키는 동시에, 남성들의 시선을 강탈함으로 시선의 대상화에서 주체가 된다. 하지만 이로 인한 사회적 수치심에서 벗어나기 위해 엘제는 영원히 눈을 감아버리는 죽음을 택한다.

On the other hand, a woman who is a subject of a male gaze recognizes that it is the most valuable thing when revealing the beauty that captures the gaze of a man while feeling shame. The beautiful beauty character, Else, has an inner desire to become a subject of gaze, but socially, she is internalizing the consciousness of a woman who is the target of a male gaze. In order to pay off his father's debt, Else makes a deal to show her nude to her father friend Dorsday. But Else is a nude in front of a lot of people, including Dorsday, and fulfills the terms of the deal with him, while at the same time, she becomes a subject in the targeting of gaze by robbing men's gaze. However, in order to escape the social shame caused by this, Else chooses death that closes her eyes forever.
