『농담』은 체코슬로바키아 출신의 소설가 밀란 쿤데라(1929-)의 첫 장편소설이자 출세작이다. 이 소설의 주제는 복수와 망각이다. 15년 전 농담으로 쓴 엽서 때문에 절망의 구렁텅이에 빠졌던 주인공 루드비크는 그동안 복수에 대한 일념으로 살아왔다. 그에게 과거 그 사건을 망각한다는 것은 자신의 자아를 상실하는 것이나 마찬가지이기 때문이다. 마침내 그는 자신을 그렇게 만든 제마네크에게 복수를 하기 위해 15년 만에 고향도시를 방문한다. 그런데 과거 자신에게 가한 행위를 완전히 망각한 제마네크의 모습에 그는 허망함을 느낀다. 그가 깨달은 것은 망각에 의한 복수의 무의미이다. 루드비크가 복수를 하기 위해 찾은 곳은 고향이다. 고향에서 그는 그 동안 멀리 했던 과거와 재회한다. 그리고 고향이 친구와의 우정이 있었던 곳이고, 친구와 함께 한 행복이 있었던 곳임을 깨닫는다. 그는 15년 만에 재회한 과거의 친구 야로슬라프와 함께 민속음악을 연주하며 잃어버렸던 행복을 되찾는다. 그러나 소설은 함께 연주를 하던 친구가 심장마비로 쓰러지는 것으로 끝난다. 평생 민속예술에 헌신했던 친구가 쓰러졌다는 것은 민속예술로의 회귀가 잘못된 희망임을 의미한다. 그러나 희망이 전혀 없는 것은 아니다. 연주를 통해 루드비크는 타인에 대한 책임감과 공감을 느끼기 때문이다. 쿤데라는 이 소설에서 망각에 의한 인간존재의 가벼움과 그리고 책임과 공감을 통한 그것의 극복가능성을 형상화하고 있다.

The Joke is the first full-length novel and maiden success-piece of Czechoslovakian novelist Milan Kundera. The theme of this novel is revenge and oblivion. The hero Ludvik, who had fallen into the depths of despair because of a postcard written in joke 15 years ago, has been living with the resolve to get revenge because forgetting that event in the past is like losing his self. Finally, he visits his hometown 15 years later to revenge on Zemanek, who made him so. However, he feels a sense of futility on seeing Zemanek, who has completely forgotten what he has done to him in the past. What he realized is the meaninglessness of revenge due to oblivion. The place Ludvik visited for revenge was his hometown. In his hometown, he is reunited with the past, which he has kept away thus far. Thereafter, he realizes that his hometown is a place where he had friendship with his friends and the happiness of being with his friends. He regains the happiness he lost while playing folk music with his former friend Jaroslav, with whom he has been reunited in 15 years. However, the novel ends with a fall of his friend, who has been playing folk music with him, due to a heart attack. The fact that his friend who has dedicated himself to folk art for life has fallen means that the return to folk art is a false hope. However, Ludvik is not completely hopeless because he feels a sense of responsibility for others and feels sympathy with others through performances. In this novel, Kundera embodies the lightness of human existence due to oblivion and the possibility to overcome it through a sense of responsibility and sympathy.
