이 글은 <정조의 한글편지>를 소개하고, 그 자료에 나타난 국어학적 특징을 분석하여 국어사적 자료로서의 가치를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 현재까지 알려진 18건 중에서 원본 이미지의 확인이 가능한 것은 14건뿐이다. 이 자료에 나타난 음운론적 특징은 주로 ㄷ 구개음화와 ㄹ 두음법칙, 어휘적 특징은 물명과 분류사를 중심으로 분석하였다. ㄷ 구개음화 현상은 31.03%의 비율을 보이는데, 고유어, 한자어, 문법형태소에서 두루 나타난다. 과도교정은 12.68%의 비율을 보이는데, 전후 시기의 문헌이나, ㄷ 구개음화가 적용된 여느 국어사 자료보다 높은 편이다. 과도교정은 ‘정조’의 구개음화에 대한 ‘권위와 관련된 의식과 심리’가 반영된 것으로 해석된다. 더불어, ㄹ 두음법칙은 100% 실현되는데, 동시기의 간본 자료보다 현실 언어가 그대로 반영된 결과로 해석된다. 그 원인으로는 ‘정조’의 개인어가 반영되었기 때문이다. 어휘적 특징은 세찬의 물목에 잘 드러난다. 세찬의 물목에서는 물명과 그에 따른 분류사가 확인된다. 물목에 나타난 물명은 전체 40개이고, 그에 따른 분류사 역시 14개 나타난다. 여기에 나타난 물명과 분류사는 거의 한자어라는 특징을 갖는다. 아울러 다른 언간 자료에 나타난 분류사와 비교했을 때도 한자어라는 특징이 두드러진다.

This research aimed at introducing < King Jeongjo’s Korean Letter > and investigating its Korean linguistic and historical value by analyzing the Korean linguistic characteristics in the material. Among 18 cases so far, only 14 cases can be confirmed with the original images. The phonologic characteristics of this material mainly displayed ㄷ palatalization and ㄹ initial law, and the lexical characteristics displayed Name of Things and Numeral Classifiers. ㄷ palatalization displayed 31.03%, which widely appeared in the native words, Chinese characters, and grammatical morphemes. Hypercorrection displayed 12.68%, which is higher than the books around the period or any other Korean historical materials applied with ㄷ palatalization. Hypercorrection is interpreted to reflect ‘the awareness and psychology related to the authority’ toward ‘King Jeongjo’s palatalization. Besides, ㄹ initial law is realized by 100%, which is interpreted to fully reflect the realistic language rather than the printed books of the same period. The reason is the reflection of ‘King Jeongjo’s’ personal language. Lexical characteristics well appear in Sechan’s Mulmok. Sechan’s Mulmok confirms Mulmyoung and classification accordingly. The number of Mulmyoung in Mulmok is 40, and the number of classification accordingly is 14. Here, most of Mulmyoung and classification are Chinese characters. Also, the remarkable characteristic is Chinese character, compared to other classification in other Eongan materials.
