A posthumous epithet is a name given by the government to honor his achievements after death in Joseon Dynasty. Joseon Dynasty had a complicated and particular procedure to grant a posthumous epithet for its justice as much as possible. This copy tried to understand characteristics of posthumous epithets given to officers in Joseon Dynasty and analyze them quantitatively. The posthumous epithet has five major characteristics. First, it is generous to see positive aspects than negative ones. Second, it complements the last evaluation for the dead, so it reveals the truth of the dead with the personality written in the last evaluation. Third, once the posthumous epithet was given, it was fixed and hardly to be modified unless the process to grant posthumous epithet has a problem. Fourth, it tended to suggest bad character examples using bad posthumous epithet. Fifth, each letter of posthumous epithet has four letters of annotations to explain what it means while explaining the meaning of the whole four letters for diversity.
In addition, I analyzed all posthumous epithets given to officers in Joseon Dynasty. However, after King Gojong the administration of posthumous epithets obviously was interrupted and this period was excluded. Consequently, the number of people who received posthumous epithets were 1,203 officers and the letters for posthumous epithets were total 427. Furthermore, the letters only used for the former were 60 letters and the letters only used for the latter were 72 letters. Among them, the former letters were 13 letters and the latter letters were 25 letters. Letters used for both the former and latter were 85 letters.
