In order to suggest the methods of applying paintings when teaching classical literature today, this study surveyed the relationship between literature and painting in the pre-modern era. In the paintings “from literature,” there had been two large aims; to convey the contents of literature and to enjoy literary works visually. The case of literary works “from painting,”was not so clear except for the poems on paintings. But a painting which most literary works referred to was a fantastic image expected generally. In the “inter-exchanges of literature and painting,”there were works of combined painting and literature, cooperative works by painters and writers, the long receptive history of painting and literature. etc. Understanding these three coherent ways of literature and painting in pre-modern time would be the basic work for making the methods of employing paintings in the education of classical literature; Students could feel familiar with the difficult classical literature through the paintings painted“from literature.”They would read the literature more easily because paintings must show the images of the characters and many vague parts that the classical literature did not show. At the same time, however, the instructors need to be aware of two things at least; It is basically impossible that paintings express the literature and usually paintings during the Joseon dynasty show the Chinese classical literature, not Korean ones of a few. They need to explain these things with proper knowledge of the art-history and different viewpoint of culture in the premodern period. Then using paintings in teaching the classical literature could be an effective strategy for improvement of humanities today.
