This paper aims to understand the meaning of the ‘Cheongjeonggaksi’s ordeal’ and 'death’ in the context of acrifice, discourse of virtuous women(烈女譚), Performance. While the ordeal and death of a “Cheongjeonggaksi” apparently accepted Buddhist motif, there are Confucian discourse on the pursuit of ‘Yeol’ and the reinforcement of male dominion. She took the ordeal and death for granted because ‘Yeol’ became a moral violence and was naturally accepted by her body. Furthermore, the shift from potential violence within the community to moral violence proves that < Dorangseonbi · Cheongjeonggaksi > is deeply related to the offer of sacrifice.
Next, we compared the images of Cheongjeonggaksi and Virtuous Women in the Joseon Dynasty. Virtuous Women in < Yeollyeophyeon > and The women who left behind the will are all ‘scapegoat’ of a male-dominated society, which resembles Cheongjeonggaksi. They sacrificed themselves to defend ‘Yeol’ in the shamanism of epic, the books published by the government, and the will. Moreover, the remains of a sacrifice offer at discourse of virtuous women are understood to be an example of the transformation of ancient religious communication into medieval ethical communication.
Lastly, understanding the inner side of Cheongjeonggaksi with reference to the participants in the Gutpan where the shamanism of epic is taken. Cheongjeonggaksi’s spontaneously participation in ordeal and deaths can be seen as an act of beneficial violence. But behind it lies the affection for Dorangseonbi. This sentiment of Cheongjeonggaksi is the same as that of the participants at Gutpan, who left their loved ones. In short, Cheongjeonggaksi’s story in < Dorangseonbi · Cheongjeonggaksi > express the mind of Kiju(祈主) and acquaintance who left their precious people and expressed their wishes at the Gutpan.
