이 논문은 최근에 소개된 가사체 고소설 <져부인젼>에 나타난 저승의 특성과 문학사적 의미를 살펴보기 위해 시도된 것이다. 주지하다시피 저승을 소재로 한 이야기는 서사무가와 설화, 고소설 등 다양한 장르에서 발견되는데, 최근에 발굴된 가사체 고소설 <져부인젼>에도 저승체험담이 실려 있어 주목된다. <져부인젼>에 실려 있는 저승체험담은 <져부인젼>이 「복선화음가」 계열의 계녀가사에 해당한다는 점에서 기존의 「복선화음가」나 「복션화음기」, 「김씨열행록」, 「여자탄식가」와 같은 가사체 고소설 작품에서는 볼 수 없었던 매우 이례적인 경우에 해당한다. <져부인젼>은 져부인의 일대기를 출생→결연→시련→시련극복→행복에 이르는 과정으로 서사화 시키고 있는데, <져부인젼>에 실려 있는 저승체험담에는 크게 두 가지 특성이 나타난다. 첫째, 복선화음의 구현이다. 효행과 부덕을 고수한 주인공 져부인은 저승에서 시부모를 통해 보상이 주어질 것임을 확약 받고 악행을 행한 뽈똥어미는 갖은 문초 끝에 비참하게 죽는다. 둘째, 이승을 주관하는 가치 판단의 세계라는 점이다. 저승은 이승과 닮은 체제를 유지하고 있지만 어디까지나 이승을 주관하며 선악이라는 가치에 따라 모든 것을 판별하는 신성한 영역이다. 이러한 저승은 도교를 앞세운 불교, 무속의 개념들이 혼재되어 있지만 어디까지나 유교적인 교화가 중심이 되고 있다. 이와 같이 <져부인젼>에 나타난 저승은 문학사적으로 중요한 의미를 지니고 있다. <져부인젼>은 초기 고소설에 등장하는 저승담의 유형을 계승하면서 조선후기 민중들의 눈높이에 맞게 저승을 보편적인 세계로 탈바꿈 시켜 놓았다. 즉 저승은 준엄한 심판의 세계이지만 민중들의 염원이 실현되는 공간이자 유교적 이념의 실천 여부에 따라 누구나 쉽게 복을 받을 수 있다는 논리의 근거로 활용된 것이다.

The study is tried to consider the characteristics of afterlife and historical significance in literature of < Jeobuin-jeon > which is recently founded as an old lyric style novel. Stories based on afterlife have been founded in various genres and < Jeobuin-jeon > is also as same as those stories that make it receive attention. afterlife in < Jeobuin-jeon > is particularly unusual case in classic novels because it belongs to < Boksunhwaumga > which is written for rules called < Gaenyeogasa > to a lady who is ahead of getting married even while most of classic novels come from original lyrics. < Jeobuin-jeon > is composed based on Jeobuin’s lifetime and emphasizes importance of virtue to her daughter. It visualizes Jeobuin’s life from birth, marry, hardship, recovery and happiness. She experiences afterlife before she raises wealth through work that it would be a hint being successful later. Afterlife in < Jeobuin-jeon > has three characteristics. First, it is the space to activate < Boksunhwaum >. Second, it reflects the world which rules life based on judging value. Therefore, Confusian harmony is center of afterlife in < Jeobuin-jeon > even though it is mixed by Buddism, Taoism and Shamanism. In addition, afterworld in < Jeobuin-jeon > is noticeable in terms of building a new paradigm containing < Gaenyeogasa > style. Shortly, it is especially special case since it reflects the recognition of people about afterlife in its era.
