벨라는 생의 마지막 불꽃을『인류 진화 속의 종교(Religion in Human Evolution)』라는 대작에 바치고 2013년 세상을 떠났다. 그것은, 시간적으로는 구석기 시대에서 현대에 이르기까지 지리적으로는 대륙의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나들었던 벨라의 학문적 여정의 대미에 다름 아니었다. 이로써, 종교적 상징과 그 의미의 창을 통해 인류사회의 변동을 설명하는 종교사회학적 보편사가 완성 된 것이다. 이는, 우리에게는, 베버 이래 베버만큼 중요한 학문적 과제가 우리 앞에 놓여 있음을 의미한다. 그러나 아직까지도 한국사회에서 벨라 연구는 부분적인 경험연구의 소개에 그치고 있을 뿐이다. 그렇기 때문에 벨라의 종교사회학에 대한 전체적인 조망조차 쉽지 않은 실정이다. 이에 이 연구에서는 개괄적인 차원에서 벨라의 종교사회학의 전모를 재조명해 보고자 하였다. 보다 자세하게 말하면 본 연구에서는 우선 상징적 실재(종교)와 사회변동의 관계를 바라보는 벨라의 독특한 종교사회학적 시각을 밝혀본 다음, 벨라의 대표적인 경험연구의 내용들을 하나하나 검토하고자 하였다. 특히 여기에서는, 벨라의 효율적 재활용을 고려하여, 전략적 차원에서 벨라의 방대한 경험연구의 내용검토를 종교진화론과 동양사회론에 초점을 맞추어 진행하였다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 벨라의 동양사회론에 초점을 맞추어 한국사회에서 벨라의 수용문제를 논의하였다. 이러한 논의를 통하여 우리는 벨라가 왜 종교사회학의 거봉으로 평가되는지를 알 수 있었다. 무엇보다도 벨라의 방법론적 도구인 상징적 실재론이 종교와 사회변동의 관계에 대한 경험적 연구를 가능하게 하는 매우 유용한 도구였다. 그 도구를 활용하여 벨라는 실제로 종교진화론, 동양사회론, 시민종교론, 마음의 습속 등에 대한 풍부한 종교사회학적 성과를 남겼다. 그럼에도 불구하고 필자는 특히 벨라의 동양사회의론에 활용된 척도, 즉 사회발전 및 진보의 척도가 종교진화론에 기초하고 있고 그렇기 때문에 다양한 동양사회의 발전경로 및 그 변화에 대한 부정적인 진단으로 귀결되었다는 아쉬움을 갖고 있다. 그러나 혹은 그렇기 때문에 이를 극복하는 것은 동양사회에 관심을 갖는 후학의 과제로 고스란히 남아 있다.

Robert N. Bellah has been internationally known for his works related to the sociology of religion. Actually he was the author of “Tokugawa Religion”, “Religion and Progress in Modern Asia”, “Beyond Belief”, “Varieties of Civil Religion”, “Habits of the Heart”. “Religion in Human Evolution” etc. which were celebrated works as famous as Max Weber's sociology of religion. But unexpectedly Bellah have not well notified relatively by now in Korea. The Purpose of this study is to display the whole aspect of Bellah. For this, this study looked into the Bellah's viewpoint of the interaction between religious reality and social change. On the ground of his perspective, we reviewed one by one his empirical studies. Finally, we discussed how to reappropriate Bellah's works, especially focusing to his writings related to Asia. Summarizing the findings of this study, first of all Bellah's works provide us to important intellectual resources for understanding empirically the interrelation of religious reality(religious symbolics and its meaning) and social change. But Bellah's Asian study has limited implications in that it contain measure originated to the theory of religious evolution which estimate negatively the diverse way and varieties of interactions between religion and social development in Asia.
