신자유주의가 초래한 불평등은 오늘날 그 대가를 치르고 있다. 그것은 생활의 영역에서 일의 영역까지 전 영역에 걸쳐져 있다. 불평등은 일상생활에서는 개인에게 수치심과 모멸감을 안겨주었고 일의 영역에서는 노동자들의 기업에 대한 신뢰, 고용주에 대한 충성, 작업장에서의 공동체 문화, 스스로 동기화된 업무 책임감을 화석화시켰다. 리처드 세넷은 그의 연구에서 현대사회가 경제적 불평등만큼이나 시민적 불평등으로 고통 받고 있다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 그러나 세넷은 그런 비판에만 골몰하지 않고 ‘움츠러든 중산층’을 위한 온전한 삶과 공동체에 대한 고민을 시도한다. 그것은 새로운 인센티브 방식의 프로그램이 아닌, ‘장인’과 ‘협력’, 그리고 ‘도시’라는 ‘삼각론’이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 세넷의 삼각론에 대해 집중적으로 고찰할 것이다. 그 과정에서 세넷이 자본주의 보완재로서의 복지시스템이 갖는 허점을 비판하는 것에 주목하여, 허약한 복지 시스템이 개인의 ‘성인 발달 기회’를 빼앗아 ‘자기 의존’의 기회가 박탈되는 사회적 결과를 논할 것이다. 세넷의 비판이론은 상호 존중과 상호 인정, 자기 의존과 자기 존중이 공존하는 ‘자유로운 개인의 공적인 인간화’를 추구한다. 이는 자기 인생의 이야기를 완성함으로써 독립적이며 자기배려적 ‘인격’을 완성하는 ‘반디불적 시민’과 같다. 결론적으로 세넷의 궁극적 연구목표란 타인을 인정하고 상호소통하며 자아를 완성해 가는 공적 인간의 복원임을 확인할 것이다.

Richard Sennett's discourses provide us with the view of not only the personal consequences of change in the nature of work and life but also their effects during the flexible capitalism. He takes up the corrosion of character as moral dimension of a person's identity and the flexibilities and uncertainties of current working life are eroding the integrity of the self, the sense of voluntary loyalty to employer and the motivated responsibility for their mission. This article, in response to “withdrawal of the people in the middle” lamenting the fall of public man, argues that urban residents and workers are constantly remaking public space of cities and redefining the human character through their lived experience of craftsmanship and collaboration. Following post-Richard Sennett research, this article questions the insistence on a traditional welfare state, which is competing “counter-publics and counter-adult development,” and blurring of self and public. In conclusion, Sennett's arguments for revitalizing public man over meritocracy and private gossips reveal the confirmation of futuristic model of better society, suggesting new forms of “firefly citizenship” and offering new critical arenas of sociology.
