이 논문은 한국의 언론자유가 위기에 처해있다고 보고 그 위기의 직접적인 원인이 언론인 자신들의 자유 포기에 있다는 것을 밝히고자 하였다. 자유는 제도적 완성태가 아니라 그것을 실현하기 위해 끊임없이 분투해야만 하는 가능태이기 때문이다. 따라서 언론자유는 제도로 이룩되는 것이 아니라 언론인 스스로 자유를 지키고 확대해나가기 위해 노력해야 비로소 얻어지는 것이다. 그런 점에서 이 논문은 언론학에서 그동안 다루어왔던 언론자유의 문제를 다른 각도에서 조명해보고자 하였다. 즉 자유의 본질은 저항을 통해 새롭게 형성해내고자 하는 ‘인격의 문제’라는 것이다. 따라서 언론자유는 언론인 개인들이 자신의 인격을 걸고 온갖 외부의 압력에 맞서서 고난을 감수하며 진실을 부르짖을 때 비로소 이룩되는 것이다. 필자는 논문의 이러한 문제의식을 뒷받침하기 위한 논거를 함석헌의 ‘씨□사상’에서 찾았다. 함석헌은 ‘자유는 곧 저항’이라는 점을 사상적으로 설파하였을 뿐만 아니라 몸소 언론인으로서 그것을 실천하기도 하였다. 지금부터 40여 년 전에 그가 직접 창간한 <씨□의 소리>는 언론인이 어떠해야 언론자유를 획득할 수 있는 지를 보여주는 중요한 전거(典據)인 셈이다. 또한 <씨□의 소리>는 제도언론이 타락했을 때 대안언론의 가능성을 보여주는 사례이기도 하다. 오늘날 한국 언론의 신뢰와 권위가 땅에 떨어지고 있는 상황에서 새삼 함석헌의 씨□사상과 그의 언론관은 우리에게 많은 시사점을 던져준다. 그는 우리 현대사의 한복판을 살아온 사상가이자 언론인이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지금껏 언론 사상가로서의 함석헌을 학문적으로 한 번도 진지하게 주목하지 않았다는 게 이상할 정도이다. 그런 점에서 이 논문은 함석헌의 언론사상을 조명해보는 첫 번째 연구인 셈이다.

This paper is to investigate the cause of Korean journalism's death, which resides in the fact that journalists of Korea themselves give up their right of free expression. Freedom is not completed by the law and institution but implemented by people's struggle. Similarly, freedom of the media is won by strengthening the freedom for journalists themselves. The nature of freedom consists in personality that forms the newness through resistance movement. Journalists must breast themselves to hardships to risk their personalities and then the freedom of the media will be gained. In this paper Ham Sokhon's Ssial-philosophy is reviewed as jurisdiction to support the above problematic. Ham Sokhon not only preached his own philosophy of ‘freedom is resistance’ as a philosopher but also put his theory into practice as a journalist. Ssial's Voice(Voice of the People), which was founded in 1970 by Ham Sokhon, showed what journalists should do to defend the freedom of media. Ham Sokhon's philosophy of journalism will demonstrate with the concept of ‘the freedom of media’ on the shaky ground that today the authority of journalism in Korea has been being collapsed.
