이 연구는 아산 정주영의 자서전과 연설문 등을 분석함으로써 한국 자본주의의 마음을 탐구하려는 사회학적 시도이다. 이론적으로 이 연구는 막스 베버의 문화사회학에 기초하되, 이를 ‘마음’ 개념을 중심으로 변형한 모델을 사용한다. 정주영이 표상하는 한국 자본주의의 마음을 우리는 파우스트 콤플렉스라 부른다. 정주영의 파우스트 콤플렉스의 핵심은 발전에 대한 강렬한 열망과 낙관주의, 그리고 생존주의이다. 이는 20세기 한국 자본주의의 발전을 특징짓는 심적 요소이기도 한데, 발전주의적 국가와 기업 그리고 자아의 연합이 결국 한국 근대의 성취를 가능하게 한 발전연합을 이룬다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 21세기적 문명사적 변환 속에서 우리는 이 생존지향적 발전주의의 대안적 가능성을 사유해야 할 필요성을 느낀다.

This article attempts at exploring sociologically the Korean capitalistic heart represented by Jung Joo Young, by analyzing his biolographical and other discourses. Based theoretically on the weberian sociology of the culture, this research will make use of a modified model of approach. We call the Korean capitalistic heart represented and symbolized by Jung Joo Young, the Faust complex whose most important tenet lies in the strong aspiration for the development, the optimism, and the survivalism. These features are also the psychic factors underlying the development of 20st century Korean capitalism. So that the developmentalist state, enterprise, and self cooperated for the achievement of Korean modernity. However, with the advent of civilizational turn we should think of the alternative of this survivalist developmentalism.
