현대사회는 인류역사상 가장 풍요로운 시대다. 그 어떤 시대보다 자유, 물질적 풍요, 평등의 시대이다. 그러나 그 이면은 인간과 사회에 의한 소외, 소유욕에 의한 갈등, 평등을 가장한 불평등이 존재하고 있다. 이러한 사회에 대한 고민은 현대사회 자체에 대한 수정, 변화를 통해 해결해나가고 있다. 한편 또 다른 측면에서 현대사회에 대한 대안으로 공동체에 대한 운동과 논의는 계속되어 왔다. 현대사회의 생산방식, 인간관계, 도시적 삶, 분배에 대한 대안 중 하나로서 대안공동체는 분명히 고려할 만한 주제이다. 대안공동체는 이념, 생산방식, 분배, 일상의 방식을 통해 기존의 사회와는 다른 대안을 제시해 주고 있다. 과거 이상적인 농촌공동체의 삶, 무소유의 이념, 자연과 함께 하는 생산방식, 공동식사와 공동주거를 통한 일상적 삶의 공유는 기존 사회와는 다른 대안적 삶이 존재하고 있고 또 여전히 실험중이라는 점을 제시해 주고 있다. 물론 이들 대안공동체는 사적소유와 공적소유의 갈등, 인간관계의 갈등, 사생활의 노출이라는 한계점을 가지고 있다. 이러한 한계는 사회적 삶속에서 내재되어 있는 근본적 한계라고 볼 수 있다. 그렇기 때문에 대안공동체의 시도와 실험을 의미가 있다. 대안공동체는 하나의 운동이며 과정이다. 많은 사람들이 이상적이든 현실적이든 공동체에 참여하고 있다. 대안공동체는 현대사회에 대한 다양한 대안 중의 하나이다. 모든 현대사회의 문제를 해결할 수는 없다. 하지만 현실과 충돌하지 않는 유토피아도 없고 대안도 없다. 여전히 대안공동체는 현실에 대한 대안을 추구하고 고민하고 있다. 그러한 고민은 여전히 주목할 만하다.

Modern society is the most prosperous era that human beings have ever experienced, also featuring more freedom, more richness and more equality than any other era of human history. However, behind it lie alienation by human beings and society, conflicts resulting from the desire to possess and unequality masking equality. Problems of modern society like these are being solved through its modification and transformation. Meanwhile, under another light, performance and argument on community as an alternative of modern society have been continued.An alternative community deserves consideration as an alternative for the production methods, human relations, urban lives and distribution of modern society. It proposes different ways of ideas, production methods, distribution and daily lives, which existing society has offered.Ideal lives of agricultural community, nonpossessive idea, production methods which follows the way of nature, and sharing of daily lives through collective board and dwelling offer different ways of life from those of existing society, which is still undergoing trials. Of course, this kind of an alternative community has limits of conflict between individual possessions and public possessions, limits of human relationship and exposure of privacy. These kinds of limits are the inherent ones lying in social lives. Therefore, trial and experiment of an alternative community has meaning. An alternative community is sort of performance and process.Lots of people are engaged in community whether in practical or in realistic way. An alternative community is one of the alternatives of modern society. All the problems of modern society cannot be resolved. However, there is no utopias or alternatives but have conflicts. An alternative community is pursuing and concerned about alternative for reality, which deserves noticing.
