Shin Yong-Ha is a representative sociologist in Korea. His study is generally called 'sociology of nation' because he has been doing research on Korean nation within the framework of sociology during life. This article covers the outline, peculiarities and issues on his 'sociology of nation'. According to his theory of nation-building, Korean nation is not a modern outcome unlike the 'nation-state' in western history, but an obvious reality leading to the ancient or primitive society in Korean history. This new and alternative perspective of nation is especially useful for the study of Third-world countries because those societies have had their own identities and concepts of nation distinct from those of western societies. Shin has been doing his unique research not on abstract/a-priori dimension but empirical footing based on the archaeological and anthropological evidences. Shin's 'sociology of nation' consists of normative expectation, autonomous recollection/introspection and strict/empirical verification for Korean nation. Definitely, it is a valuable classic of Korean sociology and huge gateway unavoidable for those who are interested in nation and nation-related issues in the field of sociology.
