이 연구는 원불교 신자들을 대상으로 한 심층적 사례연구를 통해 노년기 종교 활동과 죽음관을 규명해보고자 한 것이다. 자료는 2012년 5월부터 3개월간에 걸친 개별 면접을 통해 수집하였다. 내러티브 탐구(narrative inquiry)의 준칙에 의거해 연구주제와 연구대상을 선정하고 자료수집 방법 및 시기를 확정하여 면접 연구를 진행한 후, 내재적 함의를 추론하는 절차로 연구를 진행하였다. 면접은 다음 4 가지 주제들 - 최초의 죽음 경험과 죽음관, 종교교리와 죽음관, 장례의식과 죽음관, 죽음 준비교육과 죽음관, 좋은 죽음의 조건 -을 중심으로 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 신앙인들의 죽음관에 종교 생활이 지대한 영향을 미치며, 그것이 죽음의 준비에도 영향을 끼치게 됨을 밝힐 수 있었다. 또 연구결과를 통해 노년기 죽음의 질을 향상시키기 위해 종교 활동 프로그램이 적극 개발될 필요성이 있음도 확인하였다.

This study examines the effects of religious activities upon the views of death among the Korean elderly using the narrative inquiry. The interviewees were four elderly persons who believed in “Won-Buddhism". The narrative inquiry data were collected from in-depth interviews between May and August in 2012. Content analysis was done by such criteria of narrative inquiry as research topic, ethical considerations, issues related to the data collection (collection methods, collection period and research journal) and meaning derivation processes from experiences. We covered five topics related to views of death among the elderly: views of death and the first memory about death, views of death and a religious doctrine, views of death and a funeral rite, conditions of well-dying, a death-preparation education. It turns out that religious activity had significant effects on several areas of concept of death and preparation of death. The result shows that death preparation programs are needed in order to develop the elderly’s quality of death.
