일반적으로 종교는 행복에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 규정된다. 그러나 불평등의 심화와 함께 물질주의가 강조되고 있는 현 한국사회에서 종교와 행복의 관계는 어떠할까? 본 연구는 이러한 물음에 출원하여 1996년부터 2014년까지 약 이십여 년 동안에 걸쳐 종교와 행복의 관계를 살펴보고자 하였으며, 분석자료로 세계가치관조사(World Value Survey) 3차(1996년), 5차(2005년) 조사 및 이와 유사한 문항으로 조사된 불교사회연구소의 2014년 조사를 활용되었다. 구체적인 연구내용은 우선 한국인들이 삶에서 무엇을 중요하게 인식하는지 9년의 시간적 격차를 중심으로 확인해본다. 그리고 행복에 대한 종교의 영향력을 검증하기 위해 행복의 영향요인을 종교를 포함한 인구사회학적 특성, 존재영역, 관계영역, 성장영역으로 구분하여 살펴본 결과, 존재영역이 행복에 강한 영향을 미쳐왔으나 최근에는 가족관계가 가장 중요한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과들은 가족이 현 한국사회의 가장 중요한 조건이자 목적임을 함의한다. 하지만 전 시기에 걸쳐 확인되는 행복에 대한 종교의 영향력이 존재하지 않는 현상은 현 한국사회에서 종교의 역할에 대해 본질적 의문을 제기한다.
In general, the religion is defined as a factor positively influencing on the happiness. However, in current Korean society, what appearance does the relationship between the religion and happiness have? Starting from this question, this study has investigated the relation between religion happiness for about twenty years from 1996 to 2014, and utilized the World Value Survey’s 3rd survey data(1996) and 5th survey data (2005) and the The Jogye Order Institute of the study of Buddhism and Society’s 2014 survey as its analysis data. As the research contents, this study first identified what factor Korean recognized importantly in their lives around the temporal gap of 9 years. Next, this study classified the influential factors on happiness into the demographic characteristics, the existence area, the relationship area, and the growth area and investigated them in order to verify the religion’s influence on happiness. As the results from the investigation, it was identified that while the existence area has strongly influenced on happiness, but in recent days, the family relationship was emerged as the most important factor for happiness. Eventually, the results of this study agreed that the family was the most important condition and the purpose in current Korean society. However, the no-relation between the religion and the happiness being identified through the whole research period raises a fundamental question about the role of religion in current Korean society.
