본 연구의 핵심적 주장은 오늘날 우리의 몸이 정보체(情報體)로 환원되고 있다는 점이다. 이는 정보기술, 생명공학기술, 나노기술 등 첨단 기술들의 등장과 기술간 융합에 의해 시스템화하고 있는 새로운 기술 패러다임의 형성과 연관된 현상이라고 할 수 있다. 그 결과, 우리 몸은 고정적·자연적·통합적인 유기체로 이해되기보다 분해되고, 혼합되고, 조립되고, 변형되고, 새롭게 생성될 수 있는 이질적 융합체로 간주된다. 따라서 우주의 일부인 유기체에서 기계로 환원되었던 몸은 이제 정보를 흡수, 저장하고, 그 정보의 결과에 따라 자신의 행동을 변화시키며, 주어진 정보를 감지, 분류, 조직하는 정보기술 시스템으로 변모한다. 즉, 유기체와 기계의 내파, 이종 유기체의 결합, 복제, 맞춤 생산 등이 촉진되는 오늘날의 몸은 복합적 기술시스템의 논리와 궤적을 함께하는 것으로, 이는 시대 현실에 적합한 새로운 몸의 ‘독법(讀法)’을 요청한다. 따라서 이 글에서는 (1) 우리의 몸 관념이 기술사회적 변혁에 따른 세계관의 변화와 연동되어 있다는 점을 규명하고, (2) 첨단기술들이 ‘정보’ 논리로 수렴되어 거대한 ‘정보기술시스템’ 또는 ‘정보기술 패러다임’을 이루고 있음을 밝힌 후, (3) 그러한 기술시스템 논리가 우리 몸을 ‘정보체계’로 전환시키는 일련의 양상들을 적절한 사례와 더불어 고찰해 보고자 한다.

This study seeks to propose the theme that human body is being reduced to the stock of information. Such reduction is due to the development of IT, BT, NT and the formation of a new technological paradigm led by the convergence of aforementioned technologies. In consequence, body is considered to be something that can be decomposed, mixed, assembled, transformed and newly produced, rather than to be understood as fixed, natural and integrated organisms. Newly restructured post-body shows itself both in the implosion of machine and organism, and the fusion, duplication and customization of heterogeneous organisms. Post-body, where the hybrid of the artificial and natural is being imploded and converged is becoming the very condition of existence of our times. Such phenomenon is a direct result of our body being reduced to mere information. Organism, once a part of the universe and then reduced to machines, is now regarded as an existence which is based on information generation. Body being reduced to information, not only absorb and store information but also transform itself according to the information gathered and processed. Our body, is considered to be an existence with a special engine sensing, sorting and organizing information. For this reason, our body is to be perceived from the viewpoint of an information processing system. Given the propositions, this paper seeks to (1) identify that our conception of body is closely related with our world view reflecting ongoing techno-social dynamics, (2) examine the process where high technologies like IT, BT and NT are converging on information technological system (3) discuss current situations that our body tends to transform itself into such technological system.
