이 논문은 율곡의 마음사상 및 마음공부의 요체를 담고 있는 『격몽요결』에 나타난 마음의 용례를 분석함으로써 합심주의 문화를 이해하기 위한 경험적, 이론적 탐색을 시도하였다. 율곡의 고유한 마음사상은 마음의 구성요소들을 분석적으로 해체하는 것이 아니라 이들의 결합관계를 총체적으로 인식하게 하며, 조선 중기 이후 확립된 성리학적 사회질서의 토대를 제공하고 있다는 점에서 합심주의 문화를 이해하는데 중요한 사상적 자원이라고 할 수 있고, 『격몽요결』은 성리학의 핵심을 꿰뚫은 유학자들의 필독서이자 지행합일을 실천한 율곡의 삶과 사상이 고스란히 녹아 있는 책이기 때문이다. 율곡의 마음사상과 마음공부를 합심주의 문화와 결부시키기 위해 우선 율곡이 살았던 16세기 조선의 시대적 상황과 그 속에서 치열한 삶을 살았던 율곡의 생애를 살펴보면서 율곡이 관심을 기울였을 것으로 생각되는 합심의 대상을 도출하였다. 이어서 『격몽요결』에 나타난 마음의 용례를 성인 및 본심과의 합심, 규범 및 예와의 합심과 변심, 가족과의 합심, 타자와의 합심 등으로 분류하고, 이러한 합심 유형이 율곡의 마음사상 및 실천수양론과 어떻게 연관되어 있는지를 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 율곡의 마음사상이 갖고 있는 고유한 사상체계와 특징, 수양론에 대해서 간략히 살펴보고, 합심주의 문화에 대한 함의를 제시하였다. 특히 율곡의 마음사상에 대한 고찰 및 『격몽요결』에 나타난 마음 용례의 분석 결과는 합심의 대상 및 방법의 구체화, 변심의 내재적 가능성 등에 대한 논의를 촉발할 수 있음을 확인한 것과 율곡의 마음공부 논의가 합심의 과정론(거경-궁리-역행)과 합심을 향한 내재적 추동력에 대한 사상적 근거를 제공하고 있음을 인식하게 된 것은 이 논문이 갖는 중요한 성과이다. 이를 통해서 합심주의 문화의 사상적 근거와 작동메커니즘에 대한 이론적 자원을 확보할 수 있었기 때문이다.

The purpose of this paper is to look into the foundation of Confucian thoughts on the culture of conheartism and its mechanism. For this, we argues that Yul-Gok’s thought on heart is not to analytically dissolve the components of heart, but to totally recognize their combinational relations. At the same time, his writings provide us to important intellectual resources for understanding the culture of conheartism in that they contributed to build Neo-Confucian social order since the middle of Chosun Dynasty. In this paper the authors intend to do emprical and theoretical exploration for understanding the culture of conheartism in a way of analyzing the textual usages of ‘heart’(心) in On the Secret of Expelling Ignorance(Gyeogmongyogeol) which contains the cores of Yul-Gok’s thought on heart and the cultivative study of heart. This paper summarizes, first, Yul-Gok’s thought on heart and the cultivative study of heart representing as Gibal-Yiseung and geukGi-bokYe and second, the theory of cultivation in general. Also the paper draws out the objects of conheartism in the sixteenth century of Chosun Dynasty with a brief introduction of the historical conditions of Chosun society. As a result of the historical reading of the text, some types of conheartism are suggested: conheart with the saints and true heart, conheart and turnaway from conheart with a moral standard and courtesy, conheart wit family, conheart with others, and so forth. We assert that with this research that the themes, like the object of conheart and the methodological concretization, and the possibility of internal turnaway from conheart, would be more clarified. Additionally, the possible theoretical construction of the process of conheart and internal impetus toward conheart are newly suggested for the themes in conheartism.
