이 논문은 대한불교 원융종의 현황을 분석하고, 발전적인 대안을 제시하고자 하는 논문이다. 특히 도제양성 과 교육제도를 중심으로 문제점을 분석하고, 대안을 모색하고자 한다. 1988년 불교재산관리법의 폐지와 함께 수많은 신생종단이 등장하며, 그에 더해 한국의 종교지형 역시 극심하게 변하고 있다. 농경사회에서 산업사회로의 전환, 특히 도시집중화와 개방사회의 심화는 전통적 신행 방식에 의존하고 있는 불교계에도 그 파장을 미치고 있으며, 도제양성과 종단의 교육제도를 현대적인 정서에 부합할 수 있도록 수정하지 않으면 안 된다. 이런 점은 통계로도 드러나고 있으며, 2015년 통계청의 인구조사결과를 통해 확인할 수 있다. 불교가 한국사회에서 제3의 종교로 전락 했으며, 그런 점은 시간이 흐를수록 좀 더 심화될 것이라 예견한다. 그러나 이런 결과는 이미 수많은 전문가들의 예견이 있었다. 시대 흐름에 따른 소통의 문제가 여전히 한국불교계의 화두로 남아 있으며, 대중을 위한 불교가 아니라 깨달음이나 종단 중심의 운영이 초래한 결과라 본다. 이에 대해 전문가들은 다양한 방법을 제시해 왔으며, 한국불교를 대표하는 조계종은 느린 속도지만 문제의식 속에서 최선의 선택을 위해 노력해 왔다. 그 결과 문화포교라는 새로운 차원의 포교방법이 시도되고 있다. 문제는 군소종단이다. 그 중의 하나인 원융종은 교세나 교육제도, 포교방법 등에서 명확한 종단의 특징이 없다는 문제를 안고 있다. 이런 점을 개선하기 위한 방법으로 한국불교계가 지향해 왔던 포교의 방법을 원용하면서도 종단의 특성에 맞는 포교방법의 개발이 절실함을 지적하였다. 교육제도 역시 마찬가지다. 종단의 역량이 미미한 만큼 최대의 교육효과를 거두기 위해 선택할 수 있는 방안을 제시하였다. 궁극적으로는 원융종의 종지와 종풍에 따라 헌신할 수 있는 인재들이 지속적으로 종단에 유입될 수 있는 방안을 마련할 필요가 있다. 나아가 포교가 단순한 교세확장이 아니라 대중들에게 행복을 주고, 그들의 문제 점을 함께 공유하며, 그들에게 위안을 줄 수 있는 종단이 되도록 노력할 필요가 있다. 그렇게 될 수 있다면 원융종의 발전을 도모할 수 있다고 본다.

This paper is to seek how we can develop a new religious order in the world of Korean Buddhism analyzing the current Wonyung order as its model. Especially, we tried to find out the alternative ways dissecting the problems based on the education system to raise buddhist monks. One of the issues is that many new religious orders have appeared with the abolition of the Buddhist asset management law since 1988, so Korean religious map dramatically changes. The conversion from the farming society to the industrial society, especially the severe city centralization and open society ripple the Buddhist world which relies on the traditional faith method, therefore it requires to rectify the educational systems to raise monks fit in the modern flow. Such a phenomenon is revealed by statistics and we can confirm it as the result of census by National Statistics Office in 2015. Buddhism was degraded to the third religion in the Korean society, we predict that as time goes by it will go further than now. However, such a result has been assumed already by many professionals. The communicational issue fit in the time still remains as the question of the Korean Buddhist world, and we think that it was caused by the management centered by the religious orders and enlightenment, not the Buddhism for people. Hence, many professionals have suggested various solutions and the Jogye order, the representative Korean Buddhism, has struggled to select the best option with a critical mind, although it is slow. As a result, we can see that it is implementing a new missionary way called the cultural propagation. But the problem is the marginal religious orders. Specifically, the Wonyung order as one of them does not have any distinct features, for example, the religious empowerment, the educational system, and the way of propagation etc. In order to improve such parts, we want to point out that the development of the missionary way fit in the religious order's characteristics is needed accepting the way of propagation which the existing Korean Buddhist world have pursued. The educational system is also in the same concern. We need to have a suggestion to get the best educational effects increasing the order's ability. Lastly, it is to scout talents. We need to prepare for the plan to accept consistently the talents who can devote to follow the Wonyung order's intention and its direction. Furthermore, the propagation is not simply to expand its religious territory, but to give happiness to people sharing their problems together and it should try to become the religious order which can give comforts to them. If it is possible, I think we can develop the Wonyung order.
